Needed: photos of British night fighters

A Finnish publishing house is preparing the new edition of their most excellent book about the history of aerial night fighting. They got both the new edition of the Finnish language book ready - and also an English language edition.

The only thing they are lacking are photos of British night fighters.

The CEO of the company asked me, as I also write aviation articles to their magazines, to try our luck in "that excellent network of you virtual pilots, if you could find someone who could supply photos."

They need good quality photos or digital scanned images, with the necessary permissions and copyrights ok, of British night fighters - I'd guess from the early days of WW1 until end of WW2 (and perhaps even later). But especially WW2.

What is NOT wanted are googled images from the depths of net, with no idea of copyright holders.

I'd hear gladly of such good contacts, researchers or people with large collections of photographs, who could assist. It's a commercial job, so the photos don't need to go for free either.

Factual responses preferably through email to jkauppin@jmp.fi

I know for a fact that the only remaining Defiant in the world (Hendon) is a nightfighter variant... and an excellent example of an early British nightfighter at that. It should not be too hard to get pictures of that.

Hello Grendel.
Saw your message where you say that you need nightfighter pictures.
Well, I don't have any but here are 2 tips.
For 1st class pictures, you need someone in London or simply go there yourself. In the Imperial War Museum there is a vast photo archive and I am certain you can get 1st class pictures there. Time is of essence, for you will need to ask for your time there at least a week inforehand, and pictures take time to be copied etc. You should be able to contact them by email and ask before, - they respond emails rather quickly. Or just call them. I can dig up some names if you like, but do have a look at the IWM website. I have been there, and the archive is quite impressive.
The second tip, TheFox. He is a photographer and sells images of WW2 warbirds. You'll find him if you search the boards.
Good luck and let me know if I can help.
Regards.
Angus
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
