I've been butchering your language for a few months now in an effort to learn it, and I've been trying to go the "full immersion" route as best as possible on a budget. Of course, this basically means the best immersion I can get is music and movies, but, I figure I've met so many Germans that know English by heart by age 21, that our musicians and movies saturating your market had to have been a part of that.

I was wondering if you could help me out with some songs that I should look for. I've done a few searches on "iTunes" for german Imixes, etc.. And have found a few songs, but not much. So far Willst du mit mir gehn by Nena is pretty good. At any rate, it is much better than that blasted Cold War Relic Moskau I've been suffering through for awhile.

I'm open to just about any sort of music, I guess. I'm not really into rap, but if there are a few songs you feel I *must* listen to, I'll do it.

Also, are there any "key" songs that "everyone" knows of... Kind of like how Freebird is in America?

hi Vudak!

i like music in german language especialy from:
Herbert Grönemeyer and Reinhard Mey.

maybe a bit difficult for a beginner, but both have very good lyrics,
i think you have to "think in german" to understand it at all, but thats
mybe what you are looking for.

Oh yeah, i almost forgot about the 'Neue Deutsche Welle' - if youre not scared of the 80s, this is a MUST!

If you like rock, Die Toten Hosen are really worth listening to. (Dont miss on their Christmas song CD 'Die Roten Rosen' - ever heard "silent night" as hard rock?)

If youre more into contemporal pop: Try Julie, Fettes Brot or Die Söhne Mannheims.

Another 'must' pop wise is Herbert Grönemeyer. Id say his texts are fairly understandable as well.

PS: Us speaking such a 'fluent' 'accent free' english comes from hanging around online games too often

Edit: Seriously, i think the key to learning a language is *using* it. Place yourself into a position where you *have* to speak German. Forget about making mistakes, forget about grammar. Communicate. The rest comes by itself.

I'd like to thank everyone for replying with the exception of Mustaine because that's just awful.

I checked out quite a few of your suggestions, and grabbed a bit from everything everyone suggested, including some nifty Herbert Grönemeyer Trance remixes (ok, so maybe not the best learning tool

)

Schatzi, I am trying to get myself into a situation like that but it's just not very easy in America. Not too many people speak German. If I were taking Spanish or Polish it would be an entirely different story.

Still, I'm in a pretty good class for it, and plan on visiting in summer (I have to figure out when the World Cup is going on so I know when NOT to go - not a fan of price gauging).

Do any of you have a favorite song or two from Herbert Grönemeyer? The selection of his works are by far the most extensive and I'm pretty much just clawing in the dark right now.

David Hasslehof is a pop sensation in Germany. Or at least he was, I'm not up to date on current events over there.

Yeah, for a while Hasselhoff was every Teen girls 'wet dream'. Quite a phenomenon. Similar to Backstreet Boys, which are US bred i believe. As for now, I havent heard of him for AGES (Thank God!!), but then i dont read Bravo anymore...

Crime against humanity... right! LMAO. I wasnt referring to that fact that hes German, i was referring to the fact that im not aware of him ever singing a song with German lyrics... which makes him worthless for Vudaks purpose (amongst other things i hazard).

My favorite Grönemeyer songs are: "Mensch" and "Musik nur wenn sie laut ist"

You can always google for the lyrics on the web if you got trouble understanding them just like that.

Edit: The dates for the WorldCup games i found on the Web are from 10th of June to 9th of July (Finale). Shoot me a PM if you need more help/info.
