Okay, now that I've gotten that bit of snivelling out of the way, here's what we have to do: COMBATSIM.COM is going to become a subscriber-only site. Huh? Say again? In a few days, if you want to read articles on this site or participate on the forums, you will have to buy a subscription. The subscription fee will be $3.95 US per month. If you pay by credit card and stay subscribed with us for six months, we'll reduce the monthly renewal fee to $2.95 per month. Details on payment are at the end of this letter

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ..............

"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown

I wonder how many people are gonna pay to visit a flight sim website.

To be honest, I'd subscribe to a pr0n site before paying for that... :P

Was thinking the same thing Staga.
I'd even discontinued their news letter because it was pretty much a waste of time to read.

Used to read it it everyday, in the old format.  Takes longer to navigate these days to find new articles.  With the reduction in new flight sim software releases that interest me, I've read combatsim less two or three times a month.  Its not really worth the cost of another monthly magazine for me to read current content. I'd be inclined to subscribe only if there were major amounts of new content each month that didn't repeat coverage already available on the net.

Oh, bloody hell... no more EAW forum. And I haven't been there recently enough to learn about a community move. Bugger...

I think Gatt titled this thread perfectly.

Our peripheral colleagues sometimes seem to forget that this sim stuff is a hobby/leisure activity and the information they aggregate into a web site is only interesting and helpful.  It is not particularly valuable because it is not exclusive.  Most of what I find there I can also find elsewhere.

Re-inventing Hurst Newspapers on the web is an interesting trend. But it can only work when the product is unique or if ALL the sources of information are going subscriber(significant supplier transition).

I have really admired CombatSim.  From the quality of the information presented to the inclusion of us yokels' work to the overall presentation visually.  It has been very well executed.  I am sorry to see a subscriber effort because it causes me to re-evaluate its value to me, a modest enthusiast.

In the final analysis.  Sorry guys, I wish that there were more advertising bucks out there for you.  I don't think you'll get a revenue stream outta me.

It's Dogfighter.com for me.  They don't want any monthly money and they don't feel it's their devine right to put cookies all over my machine (like some others, not CombatSim).

To all you guys at CombatSim, thanks for some terrific reading.  I'll miss it.  To Viking1 and the crew of the past 2 years, Happy New Year and best of luck to you.

I have strong opinions about privacy.

You should get the facts about cookies and how they are used.  Then download a utility called IDcide.

Look into it and make up your own mind.

IDcide is free at this point, but it would shock you to know how many folks reach for your cookies when you log into their website.

I tried to enter a contest on an aviation/sim site a few months ago but was not allowed to enter without allowing a cookie to be written to my machine.  I got into a heavy-handed (I started it) disagreement with the proprietor.  He ended up calling me a tree-hugger and a nut among other things. But was never able to defend his presumption about writing cookies to my machine.  This is alarming.

If you download and really read Microsoft's personal information privacy pledge, it will not make you feel warm and squishy.

But make up your own mind.  I'm not a crusader here.  Just a nut/tree hugger.

:-)

ya ever notice that even if you select "send me no e-mails" option on any microsoft product they still send you a bunch of toejam. I wrote a ranting screaming squeaking E-mail as a reply to one of the junk mails they sent me, they e-mailed me again demanding to know why i felt i need to write such a letter, that if i selected not to recieve any e-mails from them then i havent, I then said "well how did i get the e-mail address to send my rude letter to?" i havent recieved any reply to that but they keep sending me toejam, but i have the filtered now.
