Hardened Troop Bunkers
« on: November 01, 2005, 04:23:59 PM »
Still seems ridiculous a single pass with 20 mm cannons can wipe out the troops at a base.

As a minimum, the bunker should be hardened to the strength of a hangar - say 2500 pounds of ord to take it out.   Better would be 4000 so a single jabo isn't going to wipe it out.

Hard to imagine troops hiding in a hole that 20 mm can destroy.

Hey, it's a wishlist, isn't it?

the barrack is too small in AH.  It needs to be big as a hangar or a mansion so that the hardness can be set to 3000 lbs

Note that most bases have 2 sets of troop barracks. It takes at least 2 passes, but I know what you mean.

Is it possible to separate troop barraks in individual huts, so each of them can be destroyed independently of others? Groop them together in limited area, so as they looks like single object. Total hardness can still same as before or slightly bigger, but you will need to destroy every hut to disable troops in field. That will make straffing harder (will require several strafe pass) while troops still vulnerable for light bombs.

Hey! That was my idea!!! Troops need to be as hard as a hangar, and I liked it when there were at least 3 barracks at each field. If you want to kill troops as a methodology it should take more than one dora for 5 bases. You can still kill barracks with cannons, it would just take 4 or 5 strafers at a time to do it. Also we ought to be able to bring base fuel down to 50%. Otherwise why even have fuel? No one strats fuel anymore, proving that it is pointless the way it is.

This is a really good idea. I'm in 100%. Seriously -- why should the ability to mount a capture be less well protected than a carrier's 5" gun? I dont mind that it can be taken out; it just needs to be harder to do.

Hey I just had an idea! (mark you calendars!)
If nothing else, give barracks tank-like protection from air to air rounds, so the porkers have to use ord -- thats consistant with the rock/paper/scissors strategy and counter-strategy process. Then the side that wants to keep their troops can do something positive -- pork the ord --  to keep 'em alive.

This is a kinda bad idea. I've lived through porkable fuel, and it isnt pretty.

Best, simple counterargument: this is a flight sim. People want to fly. THings that keep you from flying are a pain in a flight sim. Period.

Troops at an air base didnt live in hardened shelters.  We still dont. Frankly a 20mm would shred the hell out of any barracks ai ever staid in.  Even in High risk areas.

Fortunately, they usually don't stay within them and play cards before and during a strafing attack.

Edit: I can see it now...

Your right they dont, however when they dont have a barracks to sleep in or they have to constantly rebuild it is going to affect their actual fighting effectivness and numbers.  In my humble opinion this is represented in the game just fine the way it is now.

Speakin of an actual straffe attack; the troops would either of had warrning and made it to thier "battle stations" if you will or they didnt; and some troops died with a gravy boat still in thier hands(Joke) or they're getting killed while they run to thier stations or bunkers, Either way 20mm and anything to do with troops = a big fluff'n mess for the troops.

Ummmm......how can I say this......

THIS IS A GAME.

Thsoe aren't supposed to be real barracks; they're an icon on the base tyle that represents the ability of a base to capture another base.  Troops have air shelters and slit trenches, and at teh very least there were other sources of soldiers nearby any air base.  And since when do 10 guys running into an undefended "maproom" take control of an airfield?

If you're stuck on the realism thing -- I'd love to read a "real" warstory where a single plane could destroy the ability of a base to mount offenseive land operations in two passes.

This doesnt simulate war; it simulates air combat. All the capture and strategic elements are gamey, and that's completely fine.

So lets discuss how hard it should be in the game for a single plane to neutralize captures. Legitiamte question in those terms -- and I for one think it should take more effort than it does now. I would really like for there to be a tactical counter besides CAP, whcih is frankly too boring to be an option in the game. So, how about leaving the damage points for the barracks unchanged but make it hardened, like the soldiers were in shelters like they would be in a raid? Makes porking ord a countermove....

(But now that I think of it, CAP is more realistic than the maproom, isnt it?)

Hmmmmm.
dont get me wrong Simiril I see your point a 100%.              But what would the real solution be? I dont know. I think the big factor is balance some of us think it's there some of us dont.

I like the analogy you give about representation, not actual, but in the case of the 10 dudes in the map room, the fact that there is no oposition for those ten guys is represented in having to take the town down then get those troops in within a short time frame.  All the while the nme has the chance and ability to defend to the limits of there will, and supplies.

Furthermore in my opinion if the barracks are going to be significantly strengthened, then every thing else would also have to be, in order to keep the balance.

This opens a whole other can of worms, I know, but I think an "AirPlane Base" would have much more capabilitie to wage war "in the air" rather than say, mount capture style, offences, featuring troops.
