London Help Needed
« on: November 02, 2005, 10:13:33 AM »
Gentlemen, I am going to be travelling to Britain in mid-December.  Part of the trip is for business, but the wife and I plan to go early, and see some of the sights.  I would like to see the Imperial War Museum, Tower of London, Duxford, and a few other places, and the wife will be interested in the Museum of Art and (groan) shopping.

Right now, we anticipate being in the area for about a week before business takes over and I have to gaze fondly at our new bar straightener and control system "somewhere in Birmingham".

I need a decent hotel, fairly well located, not necessarily a four-star place, for a good price.  Clean and comfortable are important, parking will be needed.

Bed-and-Breakfast places would work, too.  No dives!

regards,

BE ADVISED:

Hotels in London are horrifically priced and TINY wee little boxes.

The last place I stayed at I wouldn't recommend so I won't even mention it, BUT I paid about 250 pounds (almost $500) per night and the bed took up about 90% of the room.

Travelocity is giving me a wide range of prices, from 165 USD/night up to 500 USD/night.  Typical big city pricing, you see the same thing in Chicago or New York.

Shubie - hey! We must meet up. We can have a whole day insulting Lazs! :lol;)

Yes, central London is horrendously expensive. Much cheaper round here, with a 40 minute train ride to London, but the trains suck.

Oooookay.  I've been to Chicago and New York.  At least for those prices you get a decent room in those cities.

Ditto. And paint that isn't peeling, a comfortable bed and no dry rot :)

35 miles west of London, not far from places like Windsor and Henley - big tourist magnets!

Shubert,

The advice you're getting is unfortunately correct. There are some economical B&Bs around Victoria Station, but most of them are pokey to say the least. Rent a car and stay in the Suburbs.

If you want my advice, if you are flying into Heathrow, get a hotel in the Heathrow area, they have several nice extended stay places as well. The trains from there are convenient and the drive isn't too bad.

Have a nice trip!

Here's what you do.  Get some guy at the place were you are going to just take some good shots of this bar thingy you are inspecting and have them email you the pics so you can show your boss later.  Meanwhile give beetle a call from the beach at the nice carribean resort you are staying at with all the money you would have paid to go to london.

seriously......much better experience.

English people/business trip.....or.......beach in bermuda?

Thanks, Furball.  That looks pretty good.

And don't worry about me and those shopping hordes.  I am the HordeMaster, after all!
