Nice Hang

Hope they have all you want.

Last one I went to I spent 600$ on a softairgun setup. LOL the GF was pissed.

She was even more pissed when I shot her in the bellybutton with it a few months later on accident.  (Don't ask) ((ok well the damn thing was empty, or wasnt shooting any and I had it and an armfull of crap trying to get through the door and the trigger snagged) (((lesson learned from welt on her ass? Well first and foremost treat a plastic pellet gun like a real one, and shooting the GF in the bellybutton put her out of the mood for about a week)))

I also got a scope and mount for my M1 Garand, but the scopemount sucked.

First thing I am doing in spring is a road trip to WA state to get all my damn guns back.

SCORE!!!

No M-38's, no M-44's. BUT.. I found an 1891 Dragoon (weak furniture, excellent bore, receiver and bolt) and the find of all finds... an M-27 Finn.

The M-27 was the predecessor to the M-39.. this one is still in the cosmo, has the Civil Guard cartouche on the stock, the metal is excellent; no pitting, all the parts are there.. sling, straps, cleaning rod, and get this.. it's got a freakin pristine barrel and bore, the mag follower is perfect, the bolt excellent... looks unfired since re-arsenal.

..and there are NO import marks on it anywhere above the furniture.

Here's the best part.. the guy had no idea what they were beyond 'Russian'.. I got 'em both for 200 bucks. The pair. For 200!

I had no idea the Dragoon WAS a Dragoon untill I got it home and cracked the books.. open blade front sight and front barrel band placement clearly make it out as the predecessor to the 1891/30 Nagant... an interesting piece in it's own right... but  certainly less of a find than the Finn M-27. Still it's worth easily what I paid for BOTH rifles.

I also picked up a couple of SKS's.. a beater Chinaman for my landlord, and a pristine Yugo 59/66 for me. Once I find an Albanian, my SKS collection will be complete.. my Finn collection IS complete. ;)

I scrounged a few odds and ends, picked up a few books, generally had a great morning, came home, cleaned and inspected the Yugo and headed out to the Range to check it out. It's got the funky grenade launcher and trintium night sights, shoots ok; it's a keeper. The chinaman could use some trigger work.. very hard pull, lotta creep.

All in all an excellent day. spent less than half my budget, came home with some nice firearms.

I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow on the Dragoon and the M-28.. I can't wait for the headspace guage set to arrive so i can shoot these things..

Hangtime, great finds! I think a Finn will be next to add to my collection. I went to the range yesterday and shot my M38 for the first time. I was very happy with the accuracy. It's a lot mor accurate than I am. Need plenty of practice. Also shot my scoped 91/30. The lil lady enjoyed the pistol range so over all it was a great day.

makaraov, I wus gonna pick up a cheap 91/30 and scope it (oh, the mournfoul wails of the purists!!) but every damn time I pick up one of these old rifles I just can't bring myself to do it... so I was looking for a REAL beater with mangled furniture to ease my angst.. and found the dragoon and the finn instead.

So.. I'm gonna get a nice cohate sporter long stock for the Yugo, carve off the goofy grenade launcher and pig sticker and drill & tap the receiver for a 4x32 compact scope I found. Somehow, I have absolutely no compunctions with regards to carving up an SKS. :D

With regards to your M39.. I found mine would start opening up on the shot groups after 15-20 rounds. I then discovered the furniture was all working loose. Tightened up the upper and lower receiver screws and barrel bands.. (snug, but not 'reefed' on) and the shot groups tightened up again. Go figure... you'd think a 'free floating' barrel would shoot better. ;)

Normal grouping for me at 200 yards is about 5".. the rifle can do better I'm certain.. I just can't see that well. Another thing I noticed was the 'hold'.. by using a rest at least 18" high off the table I was able to 'sit up' straight behind the gun and it then 'pockets' perfectly like it would from the standing position. THAT really improved accuracy and ended recoil fatigue damage to my shoulder completely. With the tall sandbag pile I can pump 100 rounds without the slightest discomfort. Hunched up over the rifle with a lower rest resulted in a big blue bruise and some really sloppy shooting. ;)

Cheers! :aok

Thanks for the tips. I just use sandbags but I find it's hard to keep steady at 100yrds. My groups are all over...I guess practice makes perfect. :)

On my 91/30 I used a mount that just replaces the existing rear site so I don't permanently change the rifle. I have an extended relief pistol scope on it since my eye is a good foot away from the end of the scope.

At the range yesterday it looked like Mosin day. I counted 6 MN's and 3 others were scoped besides mine. One guy had a large scope (not sure the power) on his 91/30 and was showing me his shots. He was punching the middle of the paper every round. Not bad for a 50+ yr old war horse. They are a blast to shoot.

I was interested in puting a scope on my 91/30.  What should I do and where should I look?

P.S. I don't mind modding the gun.  I already have a mn38 with a pistol sight replacing the rear sight.

The 'Scout Mount' type scope setups have been a dissapointment to me... the EER scope and my eyeballs don't seem to get along to well. I've tried several.. none of 'em get me shooting any appreciably better at 100-200 yards than I'm doing with the iron sights. The rear receiver mount setup seems a happier marrige to my eyeballs...

Laser, one of my gripes with the scout mount is the loss of the useability of the iron sights.. a receiver mount allows use of the stock sights under the scope. The big downtick of receiver mounting is the significant and permanant modification of the rifle from it's original form.. the stock has to be relieved to accept the receiver mount, the reciever must be drilled and tapped... and a turn down bolt is a must. On the other hand, a scout mount requires no permanant mods at all.. takes about 10 minutes to return the rifle to it's original configuration.

*sigh*

Now the SKS on the other hand can benefit greatly with even rudementary red dot scopes.. hell; anything's better then the iron sights on that POS. ;)

Laser, the site below has a lot of articles, on the right hand side of the page, that describes mounting a scout mount. Hangtime is right in that you loose the use of the iron sites. This is why I bought an M38 so I can shoot it with open sites and when I want to feel like Vasiliy Zaitsev I'll grab the 91/30 with scout mount. :) Of course I would like to get a real Ruskie 91/30 sniper rifle but they are a lil' pricey.

Yah.. the PU or PE equipped 91/30's are insanely priced... and the old russian optics are pretty feeble compared to a modern 50-100 dollar scope.

I was instead gonna go for a 91/30 with beat up furniture and then get a Choate stock and a Weaver #1 side mount kit and build up a very solid and accurate 500-800 yard sniper that'll shoot dirt cheap ammo all damn day. Of course by the time I got done with that mental excercise I realized I'd have as much invested in it as a decent used Remington 700. ;)

Then I saw a very nice 91/30 modified with the simple ATI reciever mount out at the range, the guy was doing very well on the 200 yard range with it. The ATI mount doesn't require any carving on the stock but you do have to drill and tap two holes on the receiver. It also comes with the gayest damn hack job turn down bolt I've ever seen.. the guy chucked that thing in the garbage and bought a beautiful turn-down bolt center part off of ebay (liked it so much I bought one myself) for about 35 bucks. All told between the ATI mount (45.00) the bolt (35.00) and pretty good scope the guy had about 150.00 in the 'sniper mods'... all up on the range he was pluggin 2" groups at 200 yards for less than 300 bucks at about 8 cents a shot.

That's not half shabby... ;)

Hangtime,

Good points on the turned down bolt.  Don't kid yourself with the "kit".  Get the ones that were heated and bent (like you said are around $35).  Take care with drilling the reciever as all such things make it weaker (there are some pretty hot loads out there especially if you get surplus - avoid black or green tips as these can be machine gun loads).

You have been inspiring me to get back to the range and chuck some lead.  I  have a little problem in locating the combination to my gun safe though.  Got lost in the move and can't seem to remember what it was.:cry

Nice finds Hang, especially that m27! I myself haven't been to a gun show since I got my 03FFL. I'm lazy so I like to just order guns and have em show up at the door. Besides, I can make my own beef jerky :)

About the yugo SKS, I've got a few and put a choate drill n tap mount on one. With a compact scope you can use the irons, load w/ stripper clips AND still dissasemble the rifle w/out removing the mount. The downside though was it made an already heavy rifle even heavier. I ended up taking the mount off and sticking with the williams firesights. Though I may switch to a techsight200.

If you're looking for a compact scope avoid Millet. I bought one and its junk!

Have fun with your old commie guns :aok:
