Invisible fire?
« on: November 06, 2005, 01:33:54 AM »
I was checking out a skin I'm working on offline, and I wanted to crash land it (gently) but I was a bit rough -- I ripped both wings off but otherwise was fine. However I'm checking the skin out in external view, taking a screenshot or two, then BAM I'm in the tower and it says "you have been killed."

I think I was on fire but even when looking at the external view there was no fire. I took screenshots but there is no film to send in. This, coupled with the odd report of 262s catching fire but not showing it made me wonder if there's a problem with the fire display code or something.

I have noticed that flame sprouts disappear if there's more than one. Like say I wing 2 bombers in a formation, or the same bomber with 2 flames, they start disappearing and only one odd little flame sprite now and then will show up. I was attacking 3 bombers a couple of days ago and I had to ask a nearby wingman who was attacking them if I had flamed all 3 or just 2. I honestly couldn't tell! He thought I'd got them all but one got away and came back to suicide bomb our field (hit his oil, not his gas tanks).

Oil never seems to disappear. Gas trails don't either. Flak always seems to show up. Is there any way to change the flame display to be just like gas and oil only slightly larger and fire-colored?

EDIT: Sys specs:
Running 1152 screen res at the time, 256 tex size
P4 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM, Ge 4400 Ti (128MB) 5MBps cable LAN.

This happens of a bunch of different planes; there's some perk bird that does. I remember I wanted to land to keep perks but typed on CH2 too long and poof.

I call it the "crunch bug" because you'll be sitting there nice and pretty, hear half on the crunching damage sound, and be in the tower.

EDIT: What I'm referring to (which may or may not be related) isn't caused by fire. It's some sort of delayed runway collision or something of the sort. With fires, you just end p in tower, but with this bug you hear the beginning of the damage sound.

I think it has to do with wich fuel tank is 'on fire'.

I remeber a while back i made some experiments about that very effect in the TA/DA. I think it was with 190s. Youd crashland them and as soon as one of the wing fuel tanks is damaged -> autotower (ie you blow up after 15 secs). I chalked it up to fire on the wing tank, that just couldnt bee seen/isnt displayed when the wing is ripped off.

IIRC, most of the 190s had that 'autotower feature', as well as some of the 109s.

190s don't have wing tanks. Ta152 does, was that what you tested?

LOL 109s don't have wing tanks either. Let's see... from memory what does have wing tanks is the 110c, 110g, Ta152, Ju88, Ju87 (for LW planes).
