I Did Something Today I've Never Done Before

I hit a friggin deer on the way to work.

I drive my 94 Explorer 25 miles to work on mostly 2 lane country back roads. It was right before dawn and I was running close to 70mph. I saw a doe pop out of the tall grass about 100 yards ahead and hit the brakes. She stopped looked at me and darted across.

I got off the brakes and back on the gas when a 2nd doe did the exact same thing only now I was 30 yards away and accelerating. I hit the brakes hard pulling far right and the deer goes for the HO.

I hit her square in the shoulder with the left headlight at 30mph. The major damage was the grill, transmission cooler, bumper and left front fender. I estimate about $2,000 in damage. Naturally I only have liability insurance.

Did you skin and keep the Doe?

Hell I used to take my old 68 Ford Custom out on dirt roads in hunt fer deer crossings... just clip them, go for the back hip and legs, dive outta the car, rope the legs and choke it.... a rag tied around the mouth and into the trunk..can fit 3, almost 4 in the trunk... 5th one in the left passenger seat with a scraf, sunglasses on and a cig danglin out the mouth, that would resemble anyones Mother~in~Law...yer safe!

Be constructive...

Sorry to hear that RPM.  Check out the junk yards, there's lots of Explorers out there and you'd save a ton if you did the work yourself.

lets see now

1) you drive a explorer 25 miles to work

2) you were on a 2 lane country road

3) it was dark

4) you were going 70 mph

5) you hit a deer

i'm going to have to get back to you on this.

Not to make light of it. Bummer about the car, but at least YOU weren't hurt as well. Sheet metal can always be repaired or replaced.

Your first mistake.

Where there is one deer, there are more.  You see one deer by the side of the road, you slow down regardless of whether they are crossing.

RPM
Does it have a seperate Tranny cooler?

Did the radiator take a hit?

Do you care what it looks like?

Junkyards are the way to go, you can prolly buy another tranny cooler for 50 bucks, the rest grab at a junk yard.

It has a seperate tranny cooler. The a/c and radiator are a bit dinged, but fine.

I plan on going junkyard hunting for the parts.

Sorry to hear that RPM. One thing consistent with deer is this: Where there is one deer, there are more, and your chances of striking the first deer you see are not as great as striking the one lurking just behind it.

Be glad you struck a deer at 30 MPH in your Explorer and not in a Honda Civic.
