Anyone remember Mike Blowers from the Seattle Mariners?
« on: November 10, 2005, 10:43:32 PM »
Tonight at our last football practice of the year, our defensive coordinator for my sons football team approached me and ask if my son would like to play ball for him as a pitcher in their Select baseball team this coming season.  Turns out one of the kids on this select team has a dad named Mike Blowers, Ex-Seattle Mariner. He's also one of the hitting coaches.  Should be an interesting season! I got a "job" as team photographer too! :aok

Edit: Blowers played for the Yankees and Dodgers too I believe...

Well, first I told him about the opportunity that Jim (our defensive coordinator) has offered us, he was elated!  Its a priveledge to play for a select team, especially sight-unseen, but I think Jim has seen my son's athletisism(sp) during football.

We had some small talk prior to the invite about Gordon's potential next year as a starter for the football team(which is very good potential.. according to him, he brought up the conversation, not I) and he asked if he played baseball, I told him he's played since he was 5 and that he's been in private pitching lessons for two years that has cost me an arm and leg...

I told my son about Blowers son being on the team later on tonight but he's only current on player in MLB that play today...anyway, he's extremely excited but again its going to be a challenge on him and the family, as we travel all over the state to play in tournaments towards the tail end of the season. The season begins in December with Pitchers and Catchers reporting in for training first, then continues out until June.

Try outs were today. My son made the team as a pitcher!  Met Mike Blowers...but didn't speak with him. According to the head coach, he'll be working with the kids at least once a week with hitting. :aok

Pretty exciting, his pitching coach (Private lessons that cost about a car payment a month!) has been Jim Parque ..Ex-White Sox pitcher (for the past 4 months) and now his hitting coach will be Mike Blowers.:aok

No, but congrats to your kid for getting advice from someone that made the show.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Seen Jim Parque a few times here in Detroit pitch against the Tigers.  Tell yer boy to just zip it and listen.  Just 10 minutes of listening to someone that ACTUALLY played in the Big Leagues will be priceless.   He's lucky.
Congrats Rip.

Thanks, Masherbrum!
Thankfully he is very aware how fortunate he is to have mentors as such, I keep reminding him of this. In this past few months, between his first year of tackle football with an excellent coaching staff, his pitching lessons at Jim Parque's center, and now with Mike coming up as his hitting coach, his attitude is of a young man, not a goof-off kid. He's coming around finally. :)  Its fun to watch the coaches repeat lifes lessons to the kids that they hear from us as parents, It reinforces that what we preach is not bull pucky! All of his coaches constantly stress work ethics that carry beyond sports into school work and adult life and its really cool seeing all these kids finally see the light! ;)

I'll post some pics of my son with Jim and Mike as soon as I find a good opportunity to do so without embarassing him. ;)

Parque was a decent pitcher for a few years with the Sox.  For the life of me I can't remember when and why he left.

The white sox management blew out his arm by overuse apparently (from talking to other trainers at BLE and WSBA) He had shoulder surgery and I don't think his strength ever came back enough to compete in MLB. He was warming up the other night, and I can garantee you that he's still got one helluva arm.
