Great read.   That part about the p51 seems to ring a bell in my mind about p51s having strange wing failures during power dives.

I read Zemke's book and seem to recall that in a dive (while under attack) he flew into a cloud/storm with lots of turbulence.  It sounded like a terminal dive, the result of  encountering compression, that would have put him into the ground if the airplane hadn't broken up.  

Will have to look this one up again.
