2.06 "Cannot connect to server, use alt?"
« on: November 11, 2005, 12:02:51 AM »
Every time I either click "online" or "HTH" and click the log in button after it asks me for my password, it immediately (no hesitation, no counting 1, 2, 3) says "Cannoe connect to host, use alternate connection?" And if I hit yet it immediately (no hesitation, no counting 1, 2, 3) takes me back to the main menu.

What's wrong with this 2.06? I did nothing other than (in order):

Go online, choose "yes" when asked to update. Installed update 2.06
Installed high-res pack (already DLed, on HD).
Installed skins pack update (already DLed, on HD).

Now I can't log in. I need help here, what's going on?

Same here krusty. Irritating isn't it? :(  Get a new release, then can't get on to try it out. Same thing happened one night last week.

It sounds likes others CAN get on. Raptor was hosting an HTH room. Widewing said he flew duels in the new spits to test them out (DA I'm guessing). So what's the dealio? Why can they get on, but we cannot?

Krusty, I think it may be a firewall issue! I had the problem since 2.05p3 and tried different fixes and work arounds (including disabling anti-virus or firewall). Eventually I ended up leaving anti-virus running and disabling the firewall and haven't had any problems since then.

I only have a hardware firewall on my router. As of yesterday it worked fine. Today it no longer works. Thus it's not my router, but thanks for the suggestion.

Krusty, just a wild guess here, but maybe your firewall doesnt recognize AH after the new patch?

Have you tried disabling the firewall or by-apssing the router?  Here is a clue.

If you can connect to the WEB server, but cannot log into the game (i.e. you get no arena list after logging in), then it is a good bet a port is being blocked as the authentication server and the WEB pages are on the same physical server.

Anti-virus programs can also cause this.

Skuzzy, has anything changed in regards to ports between 2.05 patch 4 and 2.06 patch 0?

I checked my router's firewall settings and there's nothing being blocked. I've got port triggering enabled to simplify things on my end, but I think that should cover changes (the port would stay open if I initiated the exchange, and if AH is trying to open port XXX then I'm doing the initiating, it should be fine)

My AV is simply Norton AV 2002. It does e-mail and active scans, and that's about it. It's never blocked ports on anything before. I will try with Av disabled.

EDIT: No joy. Also I ran my virus definition update while I was at it, and the AV software said it couldn't connect to the Internet. Odd....

EDIT 2: I just tried pinging the very server I'm browsing content of right now.

Pinging http://www.hitechcreations.com [12.193.161.229] with 32 bytes of data:

PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.

Ping statistics for 12.193.161.229:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

wtf??

Uh, I would check your firewall.  Something is definately blocking something.  That error message means the ping utility was not able to establish a connection.

How can I not have a connection if I'm browsing the web, posting messages, checking my e-mail, etc?

EDIT: Hrm... you think a router reboot might do the trick?

Wouldn't hurt.  Remember, pings use an ICMP packet type, not a TCP packet type.

Well I don't know what's wrong... I rebooted the router but the modem lights don't look right. The service is paid, so it's not like they cut it off or anything. I can't ping anything. I'm surprised I could check my POP3 mail and browse the web.

D-Link DCM-200 with Power, Link, Act, and Status lights.

Power's on. Link is blinking about 2 blinks a second, status is steady. I think Act flashes when there's activity but rarely when I'm looking at it.

[EDIT: http://www.computer-hardware-components.com/photos/1328_l.jpg ]

Router: Netgear RP614v3. It's got a WAN/Internet light that's blinking about as fast as the modem's link light is. The lights for each individual plug (there are 2 in the router) are steady when I go to check it (it's in the other room).
