Tonight is the night
« on: November 11, 2005, 10:53:14 AM »
Hey all,

Well tonight I will try and get online and get my a** handed to me.  Its been over 5 years since I flew online (Air Warrior) and I've been playing off line for a few days now (So only my wife and my dog know my inabilities - tonight the rest of you will).  :D

Any tips and/or suggestions.  I've been through most of the tutorials and help files (I can sort of land and sort of hit things when flying and I have my Joystick mostly configured correctly).

Oh, and what is a Furballer and Toolshedder?

Thanks

Furballer's are people that fly airplanes in order to kill other airplanes  (that come from hangers).

Toolshedders are people who blow up hangers.

See the rub?

Balsy.

Good luck tonite.

Welcome Eden.

You will have your *** handed to you.  Don't get discouraged.  There is an enormous learning courve in AH and it's guaranteed to be mighty frustrating.  The plus side is that the satifaction (when you get it) is awesome.  Gameplay and most players are fair and polite, and the community is great.  This is not a kids game, though we have quite a few young people among us, and the chatter and text is usually top notch and respectable.

You will be bitten by the AH bug.  It is an addiction stronger than heroin.  It's like a pet; Be prepared for a long term commitment.  I didn't feel marginally competent for my first year.

A toolshedder is a person happy with bombing and land grabbibg.  A furballer is happy with an endless fighter engagement.  Each one of these feels the other gets in their way of having a good time.

Welcome and enjoy!

Thanks for the feedback.  In AW we had a similar scenario between taking bases and those who just wanted to fight in the air.  Never seemed to be a big conflict (maybe because the maps were smaller).  I remember that most folks did a little of both (we had Pony Runs along with Bomber and escorts).  It was rare to see any side with a significant advantage over the others and there was always plenty of "good" bases to spawn from.

Any limitations/recommendations on which planes to fly?

In AW most flow FW190s, P-38, Spits and P-51 (I flew P-40s quite a bit just for kicks)

That's a misstatement.  Most toolshedders do not have any problem with the furballers when they furball.  The problem comes up when the furballers agitate to change the rules in order to make furballing easier.

Hmm... isn't there a monsterously large discussion of this already in progress somewhere?

Is there a term for someone who just wants to fly around and enjoy the scenery.  You know a "photographer" so to speak.  Maybe I can fly around with a sign attached to the back of the plane with advertisements on it.

Probably the best planes for noobs would be the new spit8 or spit16.  Both are great turn fighters with the 16 having the speed advantage.  If you're a speed freak try the LA7 or P51d although the LA7 is faster and will outturn the mustang. Downside of the LA7 is although it has a great cannon it has limited ammo and it's a gas hog.

Check out widewings thread called Preliminary performance numbers to find out about the new planes.

Everybody has their favorite planes and it's just going to take you some time to figure out what yours is and if it competes with the others.

Welcome aboard Eden. Heaven and Hell co exist here in perfect balance.
Ying and Yang is also well represented to. You will find Karma is also a big player here. As far as the Toolshedders and Furballers go. We all do it. Some squads here have a very specific mission, inrespects to the TS./FB.
Stay solo and do not commit to any knight/rook/ bishop faction until you get your nose bloodied a few times.:aok

Pony doesnt out turn La7 La7 doesnt out turn pony.

Drink lots of beer.

Fly them all to learn their limitations.

Dont just fly 1 plane, it will take you much longer to learn how to fight in and against them all that way.

Join missions, bomb things, learn how the entire game works, not just one aspect. Ie dont just sit in a fighter. Take up a bomber, a GV, learn what it takes to capture a base. Get ready for a whole lot of learning.
