another possible fix for spinning clipboard
« on: November 11, 2005, 07:06:05 PM »
I think i might have found a real solution to my spinning clipboard problems. They started when i upgraded, ATI to Nvidia and single core to dualcore. I wasnt sure if it was the CPU or gfx that had caused the problems to start.

After a few times messing around with some settings i "thought" it was the /usepmtimer switch in the boot.ini that A64 drivers installed that caused/fixed the problem. It wasnt.

However i just tried another program, one that forces the game to only see 1 cpu. The program is called runfirst

you put this in your system32 folder and change the shortcut of the games u have issues with.

for instance:

"E:\Games\Aces High II\aceshigh.exe"

just add runfirst to the beginning

RunFirst "E:\Games\Aces High II\aceshigh.exe"

windows then will change that to C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunFirst.exe "E:\Games\Aces High II\aceshigh.exe"

now the game runs on CPU0 and all my problems are gone.... maybe it luck i dont know or maybe its a trend?

Weird not had that problem since I first got my X2 4400.
Cured mine with Windows reinstall and latest drivers, rather than just changing the HAL.
Latest nVidia drivers seem to work great!!!

Still think it's an XP only problem, 2000 seems to run problem free.

There is something on Microsofts site about problems with multiple cores, something to do with XP moving threads from one core to the other causing issues.

aye im not sure. Ive not played for a few weeks, and yesterday when i tried to it was CONSTANTLY crashing with the spinning clipboard, and a black sky. Runfirst stopped everything. No spinning clipboard, no black sky crash. Seems strange, because as you said i was also running AH fine when i first got Dualcore. And i fresh installed as well.....

im downloading 81.89 beta drivers as i speak, 81.85 sucked on my pc because FS2004 wouldnt work......

Which way does the clipboard page rotate, clockwise or ccw?  And does it happen both offline and online?

clockwise, and it rotates as soon as i load the game, ie on the menu screen.

when i first got dual core and Nvidia gfx, Once in the server,  it didnt rotate the game would run normaly.

However last week it was just crashing constantly with a blacksky and the clipboard half out....

i created a small (err 1.8mb) video on my camera phone that shows me starting both the runfirst link, that loads fine, and then the crash from the normal link.

would it help if you saw that?
