Help clipboard map
« on: November 12, 2005, 08:26:06 AM »
I've read through the instructions. I've searched the BB.  I can create a terrain and use it, but I still cannot get a clipboard map. all I get is a white field. Yes the map is named corectly. i've saved it as a bitmap from photoshop image ready and even paint. I've saved it in a texsrc folder. but no matter what I try I still get a white map.

Could someone please take a moment and take me step by step thru the process of creating a clipboard map for your terrain. I know I'm doing something wrong that would be obvious to anyone else.

I'm using the latest release of the terrain editor.

I'm using photoshop 7

I've placed my texsrc folder in the ahiiterrain folder.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Try 512x512 -  bit map only.

Once you have it working, try 1024^2 and 2048^2

If that doesn't work, forget ps and use the map TE gives you untill you figure it out.

Mrshiver, send me the BMP that you're trying to use... e-mail address in my signature.

[edit: also, check to see if there is an alpha channel going on... get rid of it if there is.]

I don't know if this is what you meant, but you should place the texsrc folder in your (terrain name) folder.

Thanks guys for replying so promptly.

I've set the map for 512x512

Yes, I've placed the texsrc folder in the folder named for my map, but still no luck.

Dux, I've sent you the bit map.

I really appreciate all the help you guys are providing.

I've figured out alot of the other stuff myself but this one really has me stumped.

1) In the TE... Use File/Make Map to create your map. It will be in the folder with your terrain and it will be called MAP.BMP (note this is NOT a 256 color 8-bit bitmap).

2) Exit the TE and create a folder in the same folder as your terrain called texsrc. So it would look something like this...

AH2 Editor
...ahiiterr
.......yourterr
............texsrc

2) Edit the map with your favorite editor and save it as a 256 color 8 bit bitmap (in Photoshop it's indexed color with 8 bits checked) IN the texsrc folder. NOTE: The bitmap MUST be named the same as your terrain. So if your terrain is called myterr your bitmap must be called myterr.bmp and be IN the texsrc folder. Some people rename the bitmap using windows explorer and actually type myterr.bmp. What this usually results in is a file called myterr.bmp.bmp which I don't think will work.

3) Restart the TE. Your map should be seen in the map window IN the TE. If it's not you've done something wrong. Usually the 256 color 8-bit portion. Or it's not named correctly.

4) If you see the map in the TE, build your terrain.

5) Copy the .res file to AH/terrains.

6) Test terrain, map should be on clipboard.

I was able to place the map in one of my offline test maps without a problem, so we know that the format of the file is okay.

I suggest you go through NHawks nice list and double check the setup of the terrain folder, texsrc folder, etc. I think you are very close.

Is your terrain name "test"? the name of the clipboard map file needs to be the same... I have a suspicion that this might be the problem.

ie., all the pieces of your terrain need to be one name (8 letters or less)...
test.oba, test.typ, test.elv, test.bmp, etc... or it will not work.

Success! Thank you gentlemen for all your input. I haven't a clue what I did, but I went thru the process step by step one last  time and when I loaded the terrain I got a clipboard map. Now I can find my way around.

Thank you.
