.mapcenter command
« on: November 12, 2005, 04:37:55 PM »
WE're flying along in a fighter, and see a buffer message -- "fighters needed at xxx!" Or we're in tower, and the general announcement comes with "vulch light is lit at 214!!"

So we check the map, and scan the numbers....210....211...212.. .186....187...OK, other side of map, maybe sequence moved south -- no that's not it! Where the heck is 214?? We cant use the move command because its an enemy base...so we ask on country channel to find the coordinates, nearest friendly base, ANYTHING - but everyones busy. Its not much problem on a small map, but some of the big ones are very hard to search through manually.

So how about a ".mapcenter xxx" command? It would take the clipboard map and center it on any base regardless of country.

It's not a critical need, but it would be a helpful feature!

PS Would also be nice if you could use it to center on friendly players by name -- ".mapcenter simaril". Helpful when trying to join up, and MUCH easier than ".wingman" on  big maps -- again not easier to scan the huge ones manually. I'd be against allowing the command to work on enemies, for obvious (can you say "vengeance posse"?) reasons.

Between vision problems, BAC problems, clipboard maps, fatigue, BAC problems, and varied icon colors, I have a helluva time reading and typing grid coords, or panning around on a 3" square map trying to find some .25" spot.

I like this idea.

If you can't read the map, you're obviously not drunk enough.

It would be easier if we could get in the habit of say "vultch light is on FROM (the nearest friendly base)"  Then you could just type .move.

With the clipboard up place your mouse on the map left click and hold and move the map!

The idea has potential.

I can see that it would be handy for a lot of people.

You constantly hear on channel 2 "need troops at ##" but no one gives you a clue where ## is.

Good idea Simaril, hopefully we'll see it implemented in the next big patch.

I like the idea.

Have had the same prob more than once.  Esp useful...the ability to locate a player directly, not just by the departure base.

I wonder if it would be a really big effort to code?

Maybe a simpler way would be to modify the .move command so that, if the base number happens to be nme, then you move to the closest allied base.  At least then you'd be within an easy scan of where you want to be.

Or you can just select field status, select that field, and it will hilight on your map.

That's a great idea -- never thought of it.

Thanks HiTech!
