Which Vehicle?
« on: November 14, 2005, 10:35:09 AM »
What vehicle should I look int ogetting?

Toyota Tacoma?

Ford Ranger?

I need a small size truck with off road capability (not nesc. 4x4), but solid, ok on gas, and reliable.

Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner...its a 4x2 setup..It has the clearance of 4x4 but just the 2wd.  A better buy and far more reliable.

The Ranger is the most bulletproof Truck in its class.  The Tacoma is a Mid-size truck (Dakota).

Ford has the best trucks on the planet.  Believe whatever you want, they do.   Again, I would go for the Ranger.

My next-door neighbor just bought a Tacoma PreRunner. He had intended to simply buy a used 2003 or 2004 Tacoma, but found that the trucks held on to their value so well that there was little savings to be gained by going used.

As for being bulletproof, it's a good bet that you'll get 250,000 miles out of a Toyota pickup.

I'd say Ford Ranger also.  Though I don't know much about the recent models.

Our Ranger was an 86 model (or so) and lasted through to 2003 when we sold it.

Ranger in a heartbeat.  My buddy has owned 2 and loved both.  He recently traded in his early 90's model for an 05.  He got the old one when he was 16, so he's had over 10 years of trouble-free service from it, plus however long the previous owner had it.

Do your own research though, as only you know what you really need from a truck.

There was a few episodes of Top Gear last year that they deliberately tried to kill a Toyota pickup. Did some weird stuff to it. Hit it with a wrecking ball. Put it on top of a building and then blew up the building. etc...

The only rule was that they couldn't replace anything.

Damn thing still ran.

If you know another 4WD at the price of Niva - please let me know.

Niva is the only good car made here since GAZ-21 (1956).

And it's a car that can be fixed with plyers, hammer and some steel wire. It's almost as simple as a Kalashnikov. It's not as good off-road as UAZ-469, but it doesn't need a sergreant to maintain it 24/7 like UAZ.

I don't normally even consider foreign cars (bizarre, considering I'm an overseas import myself) but if I had the money to blow, I might consider looking into the 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid:

Whoops, just realized you were asking about a Truck, not an SUV, my mistake.

Heh, in the police academy we did some fire training.  One of the training exercises was putting out a car fire with handheld extinguishers.  Our instructors dumped a bunch of diesel and gas on a Chevy Lumina sedan and lit it.  Two of us put it out.  They dumped some more, lit it again.  Put it out.  Repeat probably 8-10 times, lighting different areas to simulate things like engine fires, fuel tank fires, trunk fires, passenger cabin fires, and finally fully engulfed fires.

Afterward, the instructor hopped in and started the damn thing up.  He didn't try to put it in gear, but the engine was running.  Wipers even worked if you stuck a screwdriver in and articulated the switch (the handle had melted).  Of course, the wipers were gone as was the windshield, but the wiper arms moved back and forth.  :)   I couldn't believe it.  The car was gutted and the engine still ran.  Eventually it stopped after we cut the fuel line and lit that.  :D

I've got some pretty cool pics of it but they're pretty big and I've got no place to host.
