Can anyone give me a simple laymen’s term description of how a self-sealing fuel tank works?

Very simply, layers of material, some of which expand when wet. Hole in tank - layer gets wet - swells up - blocks hole.

I vaugely remember something about a little duch boy inside that sticks a finger in the bullet hole to prevent the fuel from flooding Holland.

But if the bullet kills the little dutch boy the system fails and you leak gas anyways.

Here is a silly question:
How come if you're flying inverted & you stall, you dont gain altitude?
