US Defends White Phosphorus Use
AFX News   |  November 17, 2005

WASHINGTON - The US defended the use of white phosphorus munitions against insurgents in Iraq last year but denied civilians were targeted.

The toxic agent was used during what a U.S. Army journal called "shake and bake" missions against insurgents in the battle for Fallujah last year.

"It's part of our conventional weapons inventory. We use it like we use any other conventional weapon," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

Whitman said he had no knowledge of any civilian victims of attacks with white phosphorus.

"We don't target any civilians with any of our weapons, and to suggest U.S. forces were targeting civilians with these weapons would be wrong," he said.

"We don't target civilian populations. We go to great lengths to do everything possible to prevent civilian casualties, and collateral damage to property," he said.

Reports that white phosphorous was used in Fallujah has thrust the US into a new controversy over Iraq war tactics.

But another Defense Department spokesman highlighted that white phosphorous has been used by armies around the world for the past century.

A yellowish substance with a pungent smell similar to garlic, white phosphorous erupts spontaneously into fire when exposed to oxygen, releasing a dense white smoke.

Incandescent particles of white phosphorus can cause deep, painful chemical burns, said GlobalSecurity.Org, a Washington group that gathers information on military subjects.

A report on the battle of Fallujah published in April in the army journal Field Artillery said white phosphorous "proved to be an effective and versatile munition" in Fallujah.

"We used it for screening missions at two breeches and, later in the fight, as a potent psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider holes when we could not get effects on them with HE (high explosives)," said the report.

"We fired 'shake and bake' missions at the insurgents, using WP to flush them out and HE to take them out," it said.

"We used improved WP for screening missions when HC smoke would have been more effective and saved our WP for lethal missions," it said.

Whitman said U.S. forces used the munition mainly to create smoke screens in battle and to mark targets, but he acknowledged they were used against insurgents as well.

Lieutenant Colonel Barry Venable, another Pentagon spokesman, said the white phosphorus also was used as an incendiary weapon.

"It has been used in armies the world over for most the past century, I believe. It was used by U.S. forces in Operation Al Fajr, specifically to target enemy combatants so we could defeat them," he said.

-----------------------

Pretty soon the ACLU is going to say that using an M-4 against someone trying to kill you is cruel and unusual, despite the fact WP has been used for the last century by every country that ever fielded an army.

The logic seems to be, lets take away another effective tool and see if we can shoot paintballs that smell bad so they'd run away and take a bath, then come back to talk about their problems. The stink of it is, is the very premise that 'it could be used against civilians' is enough to create a stink about it. Its a war, you don't fight when everything is honkey dorey.

****ing retards,

Kill 'em.

Dead. By whatever means expedient.

Before they kill us.

Been the objective of War for as long as history has been recorded.
The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

...at home, or abroad.

These animals blow up babies on purpose!

I should care what happens to them?  Not likely.  IMO...You hurt little ones intentionally, and no matter what your cause was...no matter how just you may have been...you just lost.  Period.

This is just shallow-pond thinking...all emotion, no thought.

I don't get it.  What's the connection between the phosphorous story and the ACLU?  I begin to think that you may not actually know what the ACLU is and does.

We all know what the ACLU is.

A Communist organization, used to break down the moral values in our country so a communist revolution can then take place.

They hide their whole agenda by claiming they are "protecting our rights".

You know like the Right of Nambla to publish a book on how to molest 12 year old boys and get away with it.

All leftists think the ACLU needs to protect the right of NAMBLA to use WP?

Is that what this thread is about?

Yeah the NAMBLA guys need the smoke from the WP to hide their actions with your kids.

The ACLU is key in protecting their right to use WP, but not the Militaries! :D

For the love of GOD, everything is made up of chemicals, we don't call "being scalded by hot water" a chemical burn do we???

Where's the link where the ACLU says WP is bad?  Am I missing something? What's this thread all about?
Do not attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence, fear, ignorance or stupidity, because there are millions more garden variety idiots walking around in the world than there are blackhearted Machiavellis.

Yup this is just another mountain made out of a mole hill.  The funny part is people are beleiving it.

What I think wolf is trying to say is that the ACLU will probably take up a case against the US saying we used chemical weapons on civilians or something.
