Heart monitoring while playing AH2
« on: November 17, 2005, 09:34:50 PM »
A few weeks ago I had my annual physical. I'm 52 sneaking up on 53, so my doc thought that I was due for a new cardio check-up. This includes echocardiogram, stress test and a 24 hour EKG with a Holter monitor.

I did well with the stress test, taking 13 minutes to reach the target heart rate (178 bpm). I was tickled when the cardiologist told me that was among the best he'd seen in a man my age. But heck, I still do my boxing workouts and it keeps me fit. The echocardiogram was normal enough. However, the Holter monitor revealed several incidents where my heart rate shot up to 175 beats per minute. So, he asked if I had been working out. Heck no, not with that rig on. I asked him to if he could pin-point the time relative to when the monitor was turned on.

"About 9 hours", he said.

That was when I was playing AH2...

So, if you are involved in a rough and tumble furball and your heart feels like its in your throat... It probably is.

I'm 49 and went for my annual today and it included a stress test and echo blah blah blah.  I'm going to ask for a 24hour test and see but I don't think I would respond to this game with an accellerated heart rate.

Had my check up last week and asked my Doc if at 48 I should get a stress test.
LOL he told me I have been giving myself a stress test every day when I ride the trails on my mountain bike.
Said if i have not had chest pains or shortness of breath good to go.
Did see a spot on lateral chest x-ray but I have not heard anything back from him so probably nothing.

EKG was funny as the lady that did it flipped the switch and bang all of a sudden she blurts out done.

She said it was one of the fastest ones she had seen.
So I just had to ask fast is good right:confused:

She giggled and said yes it is.

Now just gotta make appointment for that colonoscopy:O

I rarely get excited in the MA.

Scenarios or TOD were something entirely different. I'd get all bunched up. Hands shaking, palms sweaty... Those were the best flying days of all.

That's what I'm hoping will happen in the new TOD. I want the panic.

Its an interesting thing you pointed out, from a point of physiology and psychology. We did a few studies at the University of Illinois on aging and stress  - and the real shocker was that stress, whether induced in real life or in a simulated enviroment is the same to your body. So, from a standpoint - if your 24, but have seen enough simulated combat to feel like you are 60 - you probally have.

PTSD is another story all together. But we've all had AAR's written on here that scare the **** out of us.

I was in the CT last night, flying a Yak9T, run into Bigmax in a 109.

Well thanks to TC I got saved, but talk about feeling like your in a meat grinder!

Around and around and around and all the time the blades kept getting closer!

Think he actually collided with TC, saving me in the process.

Yeah I can believe my heart rate was triple what it should be.

But, one thing about it, if I had to go, going out in the middle of one last fight would be just fine with me.

I used to get all wound up playing in a really good fight. So much so I could feel my heart  pounding. Now Ive learned to relax and breathe.
