I like FSO but im still having dificulties understanding the historical part of b17s 31ks alt going full power all the time

We were 18k in our group. And after most of us lost engines, we were just barely moving.

31k? Are you using the Metric System? Like Filth said, we were all 18k packed tight within 200 to 300 yards between us.

Was a wild night though, I had a blast, even if I did manage to disco part way in and end up gunning most of the night.

I have no idea what the other bomber flights were flying at, so maybe one of them was that high. As for historical accuracy in World War II B17s were preferred by many bomber crews over B24s because they had a much higher ceiling. Meaning they spent less time in range of the high alt ack guns.

I do know that 8th Air Force operated many of its missions in the high 20Ks .. not sure off the top of my head about in the low 30Ks.

As for Green flight (Nightmares and MAW), the MAW P47D11s were at 26K, the Nightmares P47D11s were at 23K, and the Nightmares B17Gs were at 18K.

So must be a different bomber group you ran into.

BS. All the B17's and p38's and p47's in the north sector were 33k+. Reason know this is we were patroling that area at 32K in 190A5's and was barely able to hold it up there. The 17's flew over us. Only way we actually got to the 17's is once they saw us they dove alittle to get speed and get away fro us. But they only dropped down to 30K. All the bomber/escorts that came from the north were 33K+. Don't know about the south one's but north ones I do.

Nope, Tedrik is right, over A50 as I remember, 5 escorted formations at about 30k. Took all the E I had to climb up there (icon 1.0) and once there they flew away out of icon range before I could get up to speed. Then I died to friendly puffy flak while chasing a P47 escort.

17's in WWII operated above 25K most of the time. For one simple reason,

Since I have been told "BS" in response to my post about the Nightmares bombers not flying at 30K here is the film. I believe if you open it in the film viewer and watch the pilot roster to the bottom right you will see that indeed our bombers, the ones of green flight, WERE flying under 20K alt.

As for other flights, as I stated before I don't know what alt they flew at.

First this was hapeniing in the North second i was not even talking much about the alt but more about the "historical" cruise speed full power all the way at 30ks

ps:i follow 3 sets of b17s 30 ks from coast to france to deep france to deep england in 190a8 couldt almost keep with them and certanly not to climb above and maintain contact

So I stand corrected with 1 flight, sry. But there was at least another set coming in at 33+k. They had 38 escorts mainly. Very few p47's.

Apology accepted; as I said I had no idea what altitude the other bomber groups came in at. The original orders suggested we take up our B17Gs to 25K alt. I modified them in flight to go instead to 18K alt because I did not think we would be able to hit A63 before the T+60 time limit.

As is I think we actually dropped on A63 I think with 6 to 4 minutes to spare. If my flight had gone to 25K alt I don't think we would have made the T+60 time limit for hitting target.
