Ruined that kids Christmas....
« on: November 26, 2005, 08:25:47 PM »
Well I got a job at Linens-N-Things and truth be told it's not a bad job.  Anyway Friday (Black Friday because of the post-thanksgiving sales rush) was my first 8 hour day and it was.....insane.  And long.  Anyway we sold out of remote controlled Christmas trees, Chocolate Fountains, iTunes radio thing for iPods, Fisher Price Escalades, and some stupid Robo Sapien toy.  The customers were amazingly nice, to my experience at least, especially with a 20 minute line.  First, some woman complained to my manager about how HE ruined her son's Christmas because HE didn't have anymore Robo Sapien toys at 6:30 in the morning, after we opened the doors at 5AM, which was another thing that she complained about, us opening too early.  We had 30+ christmas trees, 4 Escalades, 20+ Robo Sapiens, and 40+ iHome radios and the trees, Escalades and Robo Sapiens were sold out by 5:45, the radios were gone by 6:00.  The next complaint to the managers was that the iHome radios didn't include iPod's.  Had the customer read the advertisment she would have read "compatible with all MP3 players (not included)".

Today was slower but had many people say, "If you have a Friday and Saturday sale why don't you have enough products for both days?"  Again, had they read, they would have seen that it said "Limited quantities".  Then I had some lady yell at me for not having a food processor in stock.  She got angry and started with, "Well give me a rain check then" in a somewhat not nice way.  Whatever, I was getting ready to write it up when I found my department supervisor and told him about it and he said he would check if we had any in stock.  He went to check and I told the customer it would be 5-10 minutes, she got mad again, said "I don't have time for this" and left.  Whatever, not my problem.  Some other lady was extremely nice.....at the beginning.  I showed her a pan set that she was looking for (well one at least) and then she asked about poker sets.  Turns out all of the poker sets had sold out on Friday and she gave me the standard, "Well you should have more products if it is a Friday and Saturday sale."  My secondary supervisor walked by at that point and stated that we didn't have any in stock to which she gave the shpeel to again about Friday and Saturday sale.  I called in a manager;)  Managers solve EVERYTHING:aok

Gawd. I hated retail. I used to eat customers. I didn't work retail long.

Retail sucks the big brown eye, but you can make a good living doing it.

What I don't understand is why doesn't your carry more of the items that will be in high demand?  Sounds like they are losing money by not carrying more.

When I was your age Nirvana I had a teenagers dream job working at Best Buy (because we got a discount of cost + 10% and I mad $2 over minimum wage)

Anyhow we had an add for the "black friday" for a portable CD player with car adapter for $69.  Keep in mind this was 1994 and that was a helova price back then.  We sold over a 1000 units before 10AM and were sold out and the add ran all weekend.  It's call bait and switch, a good salesmen will turn a customer on to a better higher quality product and sell an extended warrenty along with it.

The next year I changed jobs and worked at the "mega mart"  (bigger than best buy in Omaha) because I made a dollar more pluss 15% commisssion on extended warrentys.  I didn't sell electronics I sold the warrenties....;)

I would work at Best Buy, because it's just a store over from us....but you have to be 18.  And I get a 25% discount off most stuff, except for things marked way down.  Besides, I know what everyone is getting for christmas this year:aok

When I worked for Best Buy I started out in the Music section of one of their new "super stores"  IT was a great job for a teenager, I got all my Car and Home audio stuff at COST + 10% wich rocked.  I would take up a part time job there now just to save money on stuff because electronics WHERE marked up that much.  Again this was 93/94, when I switched to the mart I was doing the same job cept I wore a tie, made more money, but didn't have to do any grunt work like stocking or cleaning.  Again great job for a teenager.  BUT, were you work now is probably a great place to meet chicks, if that girl you went to the dance with has allready dumped you by now cause she found out you're really a nerd gamer. ;)

No actually it was a disaster in the making with that girl, and by that I mean it's been done for like a month.

Oh and most of the girls that work there are women in their mid thrties and older, except for 4 or 5.  And younger girls don't tend to shop there.
