Need help finding info on a 109E

I'd like to do a skin on this but am seeing a 50/50 split on whether it's an E4/b or E7. If anybody has better photos or more info, I'd be much obliged.

According to Me 109 Volume 1 (From 1936 to 1942) published by Histoire & Collections, its an E-4/B.

Caption on its color profile (Page 66) reads:

Me 109E-4/B from the JG 54,
Russian Front, 1942

Pilot: Leutnant Steindl
Upper surfaces: RLM 71/02.
Lower Surfaces: RLM 65
Engine Cowling and propeller spinner: RLM 04

If I had a scanner I'd upload the profile for you, in the meantime I'll see if I can find one online for you.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Well, heres one version of its profile, but the colors are different than the one I have in the book. In the book, its green over grey with a light dusting of brown in between. Also the spinner is yellow with a dark tip, not white.

Another profile of that bird.  Another claiming E4/B

Guppy, I have seen that one as well. I'm not sure right now which I want to skin (with or sans the yellow nose), but I have an actual photo reference to the yellow nose version so I am a bit more confident making a skin for it.

Hey Krusty,

Wasn't suggesting you do mine :)  I'm just a bit of a fan of II/JG54 and did that one for fun trying to get close to the look of the 109E in the image below.  I'd only seen that camo on 109Fs so was surprised when I saw it on an E and tried to replicate it.  So I can't say it's completely accurate, just done for fun :)  THe other one would be a better option.

The camo is special to Operation Barbosa or whatever it was called. I think only JG54 used it. They used it on Es and when they transitioned to Fs they used it on them also, but overall it was only in use for a brief period (4 months? -- guessing).

Oddly enough, I think I have a similar photo to the one you just posted, but I think it was mis-labeled as a 109F! LOL

A most definately interesting 109E then wouldn't you say?  Early style canopy with armor added.  No yellow nose but it appears to have yellow below the nose.

So is this a long serving E-3?  An Early E-4 that stuck around?

This image is from the photo history of JG54 by Werner Held, Hannes Trautloft and Ekkehard Bob

It's ID'd as II/JG54 109s at Semlin-Belgrade airport at the beginning of the Russian campaign.

An interesting mix don't you think?  Old canopies, pointed spinners, some yellow noses, some not.  E-4s all?  Some E-3s?  Fun to speculate

The others have yellow noses, and this one might, as well, but it looks like the nose is either faded or the "spider camo" (my term for it) is applied over the yellow.

I know the one source mentioned green and grey uppers, but looking at the photo I don't see any variation in shade or color at all, which you WOULD see for grey/green, but might not see for darkgreen/blackgreen. So I'm trying this out. If it doesn't gel, I can always go back and change the colors in a matter of minutes.

That has no weathering layers turned on. I don't turn those on while skinning stuff like this because it's hard as hell to use the eyedropper when you need it :P
