Author Topic: Network area cable unplugged??? (Read 334 times)

HI all,
I just started getting this message, "Local Area Connection- Network Cable unplugged", and I don't understand why. Everything was fine two nights ago, then all of a sudden this message pops up on the taskbar, with the little red x on the icon. It happens very frequently, about every 2 minutes or so.
I checked the moden, the router, and all the plugs, and everything looks ok.. In fact nothing was touched by anyone in the house, so i dont get it. I thought it might be aol, so i uninstalled it, but there are still some aol files like (2)"aolservicehost.exe" "Aolacsd.exe", "Aolhostmanager",that are still there and running under processes. Now, honestly i dont know much about computers, and this is really getting on my nerves. In mid-flight/fight, host connection lost, and bye bye aces high. I tried switching from port 2 to port 3 on the router, and that hasn't helped either. I doubt the cable or router are messed up.
I'm running windows xp.
Anyone with computer know-how, please help..

unplug your router and your modem.

let them sit there for about 2 minutes.

Plug in your modem.. wait for the lights to go to normal

Plug in your router...

I'd change cables and blow out your ethernet connection sockets to make sure you don't have a dust problem

I tried that about 4 times already.. lasts about 15 minutes then the connection dies. The sent/Recieved moniters are both grey.. they'll flash for a second or two then go grey again.. Maybe i should buy a new cable just for a test, i could always return it i guess if i still have the same problem.. But it's really strange that this just started. I really don't remember doing anything different to my computer in the past 4 days.

Ok, at this point i'm sure the problem is with the router and not the cables.. Both computers are acting the same way.. i'll try messing with the router and see what happens. Its a d-link DI624

Plug from modem into computer without going through the router is the easiest way I know of to see if the router is the problem

sounds like the router. My old linksys choked on me from the day I bought. Switched to netgear and have nuthing but good times.

Speed there is a new firmware for that router and it works great. What you are describing is a common problem with the older firmware. The only thing is you have to be directly connected to the router to install the newest firmware. You need to go to Dlinks website and get the firmware. If you can't locate it there then call Dlink and tell them whats happening and ask them to send you the newest firmware via email. Its a small file and is easily tranferred via email. If I still had it on my computer here I would post it on my ftp and let you download it.

Some home routers block machines infected with viruses or trojans that generate certain kinds of traffic, and it looks just like network cable disconnection. Check for viruses, it may help.
