not forgetting the modern russian tupolev. worls fastest prop plane, its above 575mph for sure. apparently some jets need to go to afterburners to keep up, yikes!

Ok shouldn't this be limited to piston/prop and no turbo prop aircraft.

Also the record is held by a striped down f8f bearcat ,528 mph.

Nope...P-47M could do 475-480 and the P-51H was capable of 487 mph.

More Trabants have raced at Le Mans, than Do 335s that saw combat.

That was an average speed. Rarebear managed 541 mph on the downwind leg of the record run.

I forgot to mention that this speed run was done at low level, under 1,000 feet.

FYI all you Do335 fans...
The Air & Space museum annex out by Dulles Air port in Washington has one of these bad boys...
I's a beautiful plane...but I was struck by its size. It's quite a bit larger than a FW-190F8 and P-47D(40?) which are parked directly accross from it.

Wow, I'm glad someone mentioned the Bearcat so I didn't have to risk being a fool...

Anyhow, it is my understanding that the F8F bearcat is the fastest non-jet aircraft ever produced and I'm glad I wasn't alone.
