Perfect for the O'Clubs Suggestions

I just got a project in goverment. In it I have to do a research paper on laws or goverment issues that are seen as useless or mistakes. I was thinking of where I could come up with idears and the first thing that came to mind was the O'Club. Theres only two resrictions. I cannot do it on subjects that are seen as heavily emotional, like abortion. Also I cannot do it on the legalization of weed or any other drugs. So what yall think?

How about the intrusion of special interest groups and political action comittees into the inner workings of Congress?  Witness the downfall of Cunningham.

For extra credit, compare and contrast these three types of groups:

Non-commercial special interest groups and political action committees
Commercial lobbyists
Political wings of labor unions
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Considering some of the arguments Ive seen in the past years on here. I think theres plenty of material out there.

Prohibition is a good one.

Personally I would go into laws that were written for specific people.  The Congress rarely makes these laws but they do.  For instance the Shievo (SP) case.   Or go with any of the knee jerk reactionary laws they've passed in the last ten years.  Unfortunatly I can't think of any right now.

*cough Megan's law cough*

Me, I hate lawyers with a Passion.  I would do the paper on how our society passed into a Litigious society and the fact that all representatives (both sides) are lawyers does not bid an end to it any time soon.

speaking of Megans law.

I know alot of towns here and probably country wide are passing laws banning convicted sex offenders of pedophiles from living within a certain distance of certain areas.

there is a guy here. I THINK he is like 22 or 23 who was found guilty of having sex with a 16 year old girl.
In any event. in the town where he lives there is an ordinance that as a registered sex offender he cant live within 1,000 feet of a school, a park, or a school buss stop.
Which covers literally the entire town.

Anyway he is challanging this in court and as a Radio announcer here was saying. and I agree with.
"While we agree this guy is a scumbag and I certainly wouldnt want him to live near me. What I want or like, and what the law is is two different things." Point being. the guy has served his debt to society and is not on parole. He is therefore a free man and as such has the right to live wherever he wants.

How about congress sticking it's nose into Major league baseball and now the College Bowl Series? Aren't most colleges state run anyway?

Conscensual crime laws. They are victimless and only exist to impose the government's morality upon you.

Prohibition comes under "drugs: legalization" if your instructor has any heuvos.  It's way too easy pickings.

I would go for budget restraint laws which have been passed several times and have been so obviously sucessful.

There is a known propensity for sexual based offenders to recommit their crimes, FAR above someone with a history of armed robbery for example. Sex, and thoughts about the opposite sex, are a part of daily living and some of these offenders enjoy the dominance they have over their victims as it is one of the few things that bring them pleasure.

This isn't to be argued, the facts are well established and for that reason the Megan's Law exists.

Could it be better? Yes, but it is far better than no system in place at all.

Here is a government issue, corrupt public officials.  One of the things that really irks me are public officials who solicit or accept bribes in any manner, or extort people or companies for personal gain.

This bugs me from the local cop up to the level of a Congressman.

Make it a capital offense and maybe we can do something about that stuff.

Decided to do it on the electorial college. Will be about both those who think it still works and those who believe its is no longer efficent. The later side will include possible fixes and repercussions. Including the process needed to amend it from the constitution. Going to present both sides in detail neither supporting one over the other.
