88mm/CV flak still lamest part of Aces High
« on: December 03, 2005, 02:28:26 PM »
does anyone find it at all realistic or enjoyable to be shot at by ai flak when your dogfighting?

shouldnt the ai stop firing when it has its own aircraft in the vacinity?

it was customary for the jerks in the 88's to stop firing when a friendly fighter was engaging the targeted aircraft why cant it be that way in ah?

Well, it was also customary in some cases for the defending fighters to pull off to one side and let the flak blast away at the targets.  Do defending fighters do that?  Heck, it was also customary for pilots on a field being vulched to run for the slit trenches and sit out the strafing runs, not try to up from the field and have at the rascals.

Good points Zarkov, but puffy ack is still the thing I most dislike about the game. It does a lousy job of protecting bases from bomber attack and is only a minor deterrent to vulchers. You can avoid dying to it by not flying straight and level for more than a second or two, but its just plain irritating for no good purpose. If HTC halved its range for fighters it would help.

The AI that controls it is just so bogus. 3001 feet above the AA gun and it switches on, 2999 feet and it turns off. No lag, just instantly off.

Twist and turn all you like, it follows you exactly. In real life, AA batteries had mechanical computers which calculated plane trajectories. There was a 30 second or so lag between the aircraft position and speed being fed in, the solution being calculated and the shells arriving at the position the aircraft should be at. If the plane turned in that time, the shells would arrive well away from it. Putting a 30 second aim lag on the puffy AA AI would do a lot to suspend my disbelief at the way it works.

I always thought it might make more sense to have ALL the guns and Flak batteries be manned by players.

It gives players just one more thing to do in the game besides fly planes and you don't have to worry about someone complaining about being shot down by a computer.

If the arguement about "milkrunning" comes up, then have all flak and AA guns shoot up "towards" the enemy A/C but with little accuracy.
If you really wanna do some damage or be more effective then the gun will need to manned.

I have yet to see a reset on a map because the enemy "milkran" all the bases without opposition. This just doesn't happen, sure someone sneaks an undefended base here & there but all sides do it so it's a wash.

Just some thoughts.

Several whines have been recorded.
Stay out of range of ack and you wont get killed by it.

And if you have a bomb and/or cannon rounds you can gun down ack

the other night I by myself managed to kill off all the big guns on both the cruiser and the carrier.
by the time I was done virtually no fire was comming up from either ship. making it easier for 999000 to stroll in and sink the Cv.
