Decent choice?
« on: December 09, 2005, 08:11:51 PM »
Thinking on putting this together:
Asus A8N5X 939 motherboard
AMD 64 3700 retail San Diego
Corsair TwinX2048-3200 C2
Nvidia 7800GT Dual DVI
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fata1ty FPS 8

Does this look like a good choice or are them some major changes I should consider? Thanks

I am happy with a lesser box:
asus 8v 939 3400 AMD64
ati 9800 pro
1 gig ram

I run 128 textures that fit on video ram which seems to help

The only other thing i would suggest is getting a decent power supply . If that one in ur sig is a no name cheap PS . your going to have trouble . The 7800GT likes power and minimum spec are a 400W with a 20 amp 12 rail.   38

althought i have a different board , i have about the same system, it runs AH flawlessly , i cant find one thing to complain about . and for me that is rare . I am very picky about hardware and acceptable frame rates . 38

It looks good to me, although there is some noise in various enthusiast forums about how the new (and quickly discontinued) socket 939 opteron processors have a price/performance overlap at the 3700 San Diego point.  Basically you can get a socket 939 opteron cpu that runs the same speed as the 3700 San Diego, for less money.  One benefit appears to be that while the socket 939 opterons are nearly identical to the San Diego processors, they are considered "cherry" cpus due to more rigorous testing standards used for the server cpus.  There are rumors about a better memory controller in the opterons as well, but I haven't seen any specifics about that.

But basically before you buy a socket 939 A64 3700 San Diego, take a look at the socket 939 opteron running at the same clock speed.  If it's cheaper, get the opteron.

Right now on newegg, the opteron 148 and A64 3700 San Diego processors are the same price ($235), but you can get an OEM Opteron 148 for $229 if you already have a good A64 HSF.  Or take a look at the Opteron 150s for just a bit over $300.  Newegg doesn't have the best prices so you might find an opteron 148 somewhere else at a cheaper price.

I'd recommend going with the regular A8N variants rather than the budget A8N5X.  I used that board for an office system and found it is not compatible with some power supplies.  (It will not warm boot without cycling the power switch on the power supply or pulling the power cord.)  I see that quite a few people have reported boot issues with this board.

I believe the A8N-E is maybe $10 more than the A8N5X.

I didn't realize that A8N5X was the budget version...  I'd go for the deluxe or premium A8N.  The build quality will be there, the mobo components will be great, and they come with extras that you might like.

The A8N5X is $92 at newegg.
The A8N-SLI Delux is $159, and the Premium is $169.  The A8N32 Deluxe is $229, but the A8N32 is really only aimed at those who are definately going to use SLI.

The Deluxe comes with a ton of cables and adaptors, and the Premium comes with the extras of the delux plus a fanless northbridge cooling setup.  I'd probably go for the deluxe myself...

The A8N32 just has an extra pci-e 16x channel so you can run 2 sli vid cards at full bus speed instead of half each like with most other sli boards.  That's probably not worth the money though as vid cards still can't saturate the pci-e bus any more than going to AGP from PCI helped the first AGP cards, so I'd pass on the A8N32 for now.
