Remember when....?
« on: December 13, 2005, 08:18:44 PM »
i dont know about you guys but the 2 years ive been playing this game have been the most exciting thing i have ever done. However recently ive noticed hardly any missions r ever up and when they are they r just a 6 person mission. I remember when i first joined that there was missions up every 10 minutes and they were usually big missions around 15 guys. Remember when the rooks worked as a team instead they are furbal kings. Remember when knights were the fierce knights, now they gettin there butts beatn. Bishops..........  Remember when this game was about winnin the war instead its now find a furball and kill. Remember when???

This was kind of long, so I sort of "speed read" it just to get a good summary.  So here's what I got out of it:  Paying for an internet game is the most exciting thing you've ever done; You like to be surrounded by 6 to 15 guys, and go looking for new ones after about 10-15 minutes; You know some other guys who enjoy getting spanked; And finally, you must be serving in Iraq because currently that is the only war we are trying to win.  :aok

After you blow up your hangars, you can still save a little ammo for the big furball offshore  =)

Thing is I don't think the Rooks either remember or realize that furballing doesn't necessarily have to be an alternative to taking bases and winning the map. That's what fighter escorts essentially DO. They just need to remember that it's their job to make sure the Buffs and jabos get their targets and, if necessary, help drop the town.

I'll admit I don't like flying attack/jabo missions. I'm almost pure fighter. My bombing accuracy is worse than my gunnery, but if the skies are clear and a good cap is on the field I WILL knock down and de-ack the town or field so troops can be brought in.

And the Rooks aren't ALL bad. There's a couple guys that really coordinate their attacks well (remember the late-night Blitzkrieg on the last map over the weekend? We took 3-4 bases within about an hour and a half to two hours). I love flying with 'em and usually join up when they're on because they can get things done and gives me a chance to furball constructively.

But then again, I'm just a "newbie" (to THIS game) so probably noone will pay me much attention, anyway.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Furball Kings??  Please.  The Rook idea of "furballing" is to lure one NME fighter down low, and then 5-10 of them pile on and shoot till he's dead.   I think your "memories" have been enhanced by some mind altering substance at some point.

I miss the beta maps.  Like the one with all the snowmen and the big volcanoe in the middle.

As for missions, I recall Ripsnort used to create a bunch when I first started out as a Knit.  I've started to make a few here and there lately as a rook and they've always had a lot of joiners.

I remember alot of things in my 9+ years of online flying experiance.

I remember when there was a certain... honor among players

when everyone pretty much agreed that an HO was a pretty lame thing to do and you knew yourself that if you HO'd even by accident you just took the lame way out.

I remember when a call of "Bingo Ammo, or Bingo Fuel" by either party would bring an end to a fight and if you had fought well or if your opponent fought well you would let him go land with a " Good Fight" and not chase or be chased 3 sectors to vulch or be vulched upon landing.

I remember when one plane upping at 1 base by himself to face the 1 plane attacking it would be allowed to up and square off on at least semi equal terms without the 1 plane attacking the base vulching the 1 plane defending over and over just to get a free and easy kill.

I remember bomber runs to a strat target that ment more then just perk points and ranking. It ment a particular type of plane would not be available untill factory was rebuilt.
I remember bomber runs to such a strat target with fully manned "deathstars" took on a partylike atmosphere that were almost unique unto themselves ( also remember piloting such a deathstar and falling alseep en route onlyto wake up about 5 hours later with my plane empty of personel and diitched somewhere about 10 sectors off the edge of the map LOL)

I remember people actually upping to defend such a  strat target with earnest as they knew if they didnt they would loose their precious ride.

I remember that if you tried to up from a feild with damaged maintenance there was a good chance that your plane might not be working correctly right from the start

I also remember pyramid shaped mountains and clouds that never moved yet you could never fly into and the sun was just a yellow dot in the virtual sky.

Yes Times changed. Games have changed. Some for the better some for the worse. Some I miss. Some I dont
But of all the things I miss. I miss that certain honor that existed, those unwritten rules that almost everyone seemed to understand and follow.

I still see it here and there. Mostly from the old timers whos numbers by contrast and attrition seem to get smaller and smaller with each year when compaired to the newer players who just want the quick easy kill and
itdoesntmatterhowtheygetitthe yjustwantitnownowNOW.

Im sure many of the newer players will look at this and laugh.
I am also sure alot of the older players will look at this ith almost a certain sadness. And remember what it was once like
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

THAT brought back some memories, Drediock.  Hitting the Spit Factory late at night, flying through a cloud of Spits at 32k feet, loaded down with 12 people.  That stuff was a blast.  I also remember the "bingo" calls that were ed.  I can remember all of these things.

I can also remember a younger Arcades057 who signed up for this game remembering it all and who couldn't wait to experience the comraderie again.  And I remember that younger Arcades057 taking off from a base, moving to his first con... and getting HO'ed.  Then I remember taking off again... and getting HO'ed.  And again... and again...  I remember deciding "screw it, either HO or be HO'ed."  And then I remember being berated on 200 by people complaining about it.  I didn't complain about it; I haven't ever for one reason:  The head-on approach is the opening merge.  To give it up, for some, is the loss of advantage.  If I'm in my Zero and you're flying a N1K and not a very good flyer, you just died if you miss that HO attempt.

So I accept certain "gamey" aspects of this game because overall, it rocks.

Honor in computer games, silly enough on its own but outrageeusly sad when the game in question is a simulation of WW2 fighter combat where HO, gangbangingh, vulching, running away, ack hiding and outright seal clubbing were commonplace....
