Why have we let politics do this to us?

Why have we let politics do this to us?

We are all Americans.

Who here does not want a better America for their fellow Americans?

Why have we become so jaded and single minded? (Not all of us, but many) Why have we let the seeds of hate slip into our politics?

Why do we let politicians lead us in this hate?

Again, we are all Americans. Liberal or Conservative, (minus out the extreme wack jobs on the left and right who hate the other side so much they can not be talked to or hate this country for it’s history or any of the extreme points of view one can take, I am talking normal Americans who still have the ability to think for themselves.)

Why is it so hard to have a civil discussion about politics? Liberal or conservative, the average American from either side is not a bad person, they just want the country to be a better place for them, their family and their fellow Americans.

I was listening to something on the radio; they were talking about how Palestinian kids are taught to hate Israel from a pretty young age. This got me thinking about Politics here. I don’t think we are at that same level of hate, but there is some.

You hear it all the time, Bush is Hitler, Kerry is a commie, Rove is Satan, Clinton is a lying scumbag, etc etc etc. ( I know I am guilty of this sometimes but at least I am thinking about why and looking for change)

Some of this crap comes from our elected officials. It sickens me and it’s from both sides. How has politics gotten to the point where one side hates the other? The goals of “we the people” are not that far apart.

We are all Americans. I have friends who are liberal and who are conservative and everything in between.

Why is it so hard to discuss a political topic in an adult manor without letting it get personal?

Would it be so hard to have a discussion on the Public schools, Energy policy, Abortion, taxes, the environment, defense spending, the war etc and try and understand the other side even if you do not agree and keep it civil and try and learn about that subject? Maybe even work with the other side and come up with reasonable laws? (Keep in mind I am talking reasonable normal people here, not people who can only spew party BS, Stop, think, engage your brain, think about the whole of something then open you mouth?)

Why do some of us come into a conversation on a topic with arrogance and immediately dismiss the people who disagree with us as idiots? Why think of your fellow Americans in such a way? (Unless the person has really proven to be an idiot, then just do us all a favor and ignore them)

Having thought it through I think it is the slimy politicians (both sides, have these, hell most of both sides ARE these) and the news media that sensationalize the outlandish things said on both sides that have led us down this path of hate.

That and the extremists who can never let their pet issue be compromised on.

I know its time for a new set of people to lead this country, but I do not think we will get good men and women in the future, the way things are in politics now, good people will not go near it.  That saddens me.  But maybe we as Americans can change the way we act and force that on our elected leaders.

That’s probably Stupid Idealism on my part but for me it’s the only hope I see for a better America.

Merry Christmas guys...

The revolution is near.  Don't worry though.  Us conservatives will make it quick.

I have hope Skuzzy, there are some very bright cookies on both sides of the isle here.

If it can't stay civil, it will just illustrate my point to a degree..

mudslinging, muckraking and mayhem is a very old american tradition in politics.

better we toss words than bullets, mmmmmkay.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

Well Gto....nice post

I sure have no answers at all.

Before my Mom died this year , early part of it anyways , I used to really keep up on the news. Kept up with who said what and what was going on in the world. But as the year went on and things changed with my Mom and family , I changed.

My whole world changed with it. I have made a real comitment to not worrying any longer about what the world thinks , wants , does , politics and the likes.

MY world is my family and God. Nothing more.

I don't care at all about the plight of the people in Africa. Iraqis killing them selves. Soldiers killing them. Terrorists killing anyone they want. I chose NOT to let my world be in turmoil.

I will not give the media its wishes to watch their CRAP anymore. I will not let some politician , left or right sided , influence me in ANYWAY and try to convince me they know whats best for me ever. I have my feelings on MANY matters. Many of which you listed in your excellent post.

But to voice them breeds contempt. It breeds hatred as you said. SO in the name of just enjoying my life , family and all it has to offer to me , i just let the people who clim to be experts look stupid.

Me , I just work , pay my taxes , go to church when I can , hold my family close to me , and live quietly.

People don't research issues enough to have an intellectual public debate on the issues. It applies to both the uneducated and educated. How many MBA middle managers at a local manufacturing company read non fiction history or books on contemporary political events? Great at determining Jane missed her numbers for the quarter, but you'd get a blank stare if you asked him for his opinion on the Balfour Declaration. Dry **** to about 90 percent of the population. How many people even read a paper, or if they do beyond the sports or tempo sections? Maybe throw in the business section.

Broadcast journalism is fluff, even when it is seriously approached, and most of the time it is red-faced donutheads yelling at each other for 30 minutes of WWF style infotainment. You need two hours of depth from a program like Frontline to even start to get some knowledge on major issue. The Daly Show, liberal slant and all (though I’ve seen them skewer liberals in return), is about the most honest, quality journalism on television. They ask questions that other reporters, with real careers, would be afraid to ask and lose that beltway insider access and career development.

But some people do know the score. They understand that most people do not know their bellybutton from a hole in the ground, and that you can use common communications and marketing techniques to sway opinion. Real Maslow hierarchy of needs stuff. People like to belong to a group, of course, a SUPERIOR group. People don’t like to take responsibility for mistakes or be wrong.  It only takes a feather, not a sledgehammer, to push those buttons appropriately. The elite “leadership class” knows that the easiest way to achieve their policy goals (liberal, conservative, buzzword c, buzzword d) is through emotion rather than logic. Scare your side enough to get more of yours to the polls than the other side. BURN THE WITCH! Make sure your side can see all the flaws (often legitimate) in the other side but count on them having a knee jerk defense reaction when their side’s warts are exposed (Spitfire vs. Me-109/Ford vs. Chevy/ Kerry vs. Bush).

Common manipulation of human behavior that works if you're selling hemorrhoid cream, policy or a politician. Works so well you can get a doctorate in the techniques. Read case studies on successful campaigns. Test market messages and poll or focus group to apply changes. Tune up your voter base the way someone would fine tune a guitar string. The voter base halfway knows this, but… it’s always THE OTHER SIDE doing the manipulation.

To make a short story long, we don’t have a reasoned debate because the shallow, emotion-based alternative is far easier and more effective. Proven time and time again -- that rare animal that is both an academic and practical reality. We behave the way we are conditioned to behave -- more or less, YMMV.

My great goal in life may be to start a movement to get Marketing 101 taught at the Jr. High or high school level. When they say an "educated consumer is the best consumer" they are lying. That's the last thing anybody wants when they are trying to sell you something (unless they have the exclusive, far superior product).
