I changed my mind about IL2
« on: December 28, 2001, 06:24:00 PM »
when I fist played the demo I didnt like it much. Seemed like a fa meets eaw/janes with a pretty lame fm.

When it was 1st released I bought it (dunno why but I did). I played it long enough to get my stick scaled and a sge profile set up the way I like. The german campaign I thought was bs because I would have a harder time fighting off the other 109s to get kills then fightin the nme. Online play was just like eaw or janes or mcfs1/2. Some laggy hosts and idiots who cant click ready and when you finally get in game you lost half the guys on the way in.

I'm plum burned out on Ah for the most part and still have a sub to wb and wwiiol. I only play wb3 but its much the same as AH.

wwiiol just is very little fun to me.

been playing SH2 which is great fun and a little ghost recon. I'm burned out on ofp and MOH demo is crap.

I'll admit I own rtcw which is a kick just to fek things up.

I'm off till jan 3 and basically spending it chillin out lookin at all these cds and I decided to go ahead and suffer through some Il2 campaign.

By the 5th mission I was really diggin it. Theres just not enough vvs aircraft sent up at 1 time.

All in all it kicks ass. I downloaded a few user made missions and 1 ge campaign. Haven't flown a vvs plane yet (dont really care too) but so far I'm into it.

Online I moved over to hyperlobby which is some what better then ubi but same deal I spend the majority of the time waiting around to actually play (just like all box sims with online aspect)

Anyway I've changed my mind and despite some quirks I'm currently enjoying it.

Well, I have been a believer since beta and every minute I spend online with IL2 reinforces that belief.

How do I avoid the unpleasant wait in hyperlobby?
I take guys in with me, we go to a team room and fly.

Also, every online game you join is stored in net cache, just pair up the .mis and .properties files, rename them, move them to the coop folder and voila! missions you can host online yourself or use as single play by opening multiplay and launching your own server.

AI flies the rest and it ain't too shabby.

I have been reluctant to post about IL2 here due to the mindset of many  of the natives but if you are a WWII flightsimmer, not strictly an online with 200 plus flightsimmer you must not miss this one.

The Box is just the beginning guys!

Well i bought it but never managed to get a single online game yet.
Always get left behind with a failed to start game engine or some such message.
I have come to the opinion that IL2 does not coexist happily online in a comp with a network card and ADSL modem.
1 Boxed game gathering dust may as well be in the trash for all the good it does me.

When you go to fly for the VVS, shooting down the bombers will be easier, but fighting cheato AI 109's in Mig3 gets to be pain in the bellybutton  :)

Graphics and sound are the best I've seen.  Scenery, sky, weather, plane 3d models, weapon effects, contrails, dust trails, etc.  Attention to detail in this area is unequalled by any product I've seen.

FM and GM and DM are very good.  There are flaws but the models are "good enough".

Also for me it has been very stable and free of major bugs.  I've yet to see anything resembling a graphics glitch.

But offline gameplay is nothing special if you had Falcon 3.0 or Longbow 2.

And friendly and enemy AI range from weak to bizzare.

All the immersion I get from graphics and sound is lost when I see some of the things the AI do or what my plane does on autopilot which I have to use in order to stay with my AI squadron.

I'm going to try online.  Maybe it's a better game when you minimize the effect of the AI?

"Longbow 2."

Now THERE's a game that really rocked but got screwed in the MP aspect.

Even with its limited MP, it was VERY fun to play. I still try to play online, but not many people to play with. When you get yourself a good front seater to man your guns and you can concentrate on flying.. oooh boy, its a pucker factor!

I have a single question about IL2. Does it support multiple controlers at the same time like AH does?

That is, if you have more than one joy you select the joy and the axis for each axis the game uses.

I do not know the answer Mandoble but if you base purchasing IL2 on inclusion or lack of that feature alone you will miss one hell of a show.

I totally agree that the offline aspect out of the box is a bit bland but when you go online and see some of the user created missions you will be amazed....well you might not be but I sure am.

IL2, with its powerful mission builder, will probably soon have a zillion missions for the offliners and the online mission file grows everytime you join a new mission on hyperlobby.

I am not so much burned out on AH as I am burned out on the Main but since Big Week I have not done any AH and have not really missed it.

I hope 1.09 rekindles my interest in high level bombing which is my reason for being in AH to begin with but until then IL2 mud moving is a totally....err, moving experience.

Yes . Brakes are only one side or the other on USB CH Pro's , they don't have a left and right one , unless I missed it .

I have Saitek x 36 , USB CH Pro's , works fine without the "Bob Church" driver .

Do I like it ? Don't know really , it sits getting dusty .
My current Ace's High handle is spro

ĀFAIK, these drivers join the CH pedals with X36 as a single joy, not as two separate devices.
In my case I have USB X36 and CH Pro pedals atached to an old TM F16 joy (that is the second joy).

Yes, but it appears you cannot calibrate joysticks beyond J/S 1.

So if your pedals/throttle are on J/S 2 it doesn't let you calibrate or scale them.

Hey, Funked, coop missions with both human/AI elements are a blast.  You get none of the maniacal furball behavior in the il2 dogfight arenas, you have a mission to complete, and when it's over, it's over - rtb.

I really like it w/o icons, because it makes you a lot more attentive to what's going on.  Combat seems more 'real' too, because the environment has a way of lulling you into a sense of security, then bites you in the ass.  With RW and a few squaddies against another group from a squad with some AI elements, it can be very intense and immersive.  Last thing I like is that it's one mission, I fly my vector, try to hold try to the mission and my squaddies, and hope to make it home alive.  And all this with these graphics and effects.  It's great   :)

Vulcan, so you can use several joys at the same time but calibrate only the first one inside the game, right?

I can't get it to see my TM TQS analog throttle in Windows XP. Others are having the same problem. Is there an .ini file to force it to recognize another joystick?

Dunno how to make it recoqnize that stick, but scaling of second controllers (that it CAN recognize) can be done manually in the conf.ini

If I want to adjust my pedals thats what I have to do.
