we used to call it snake shot.  I dont recall ever using 22 snake shot.  But I had some for my Ruger .357 flattop.  It was great for snakes and semi ok for grouse.  I'd put the distance more like 4 or 5 feet.   I shot a grouse once at about 10 - 12 feet, cleaned it and only found 1 pellet.  It was stuck in the breast, didnt even pentrate to a vital area.  The sound of the gun going off probably killed it.
