HTC is it just bad luck or is town puffy AK somehow magnetized to 262's, it seems if im at an enemy base in a normal plane town ak will shoot at me all day an never hit me. However when im in a 262  7,000 feet above ground atleast a mile away flyin by 500mph BOOM! town puffy AK nails my 262 causing it to catch fire.

Its happened more then once.

Has something to do with how puffy ack tracks targets with more accuracy when they are traveling at higher speeds. There is a more indepth answer here somewhere

Well. If it means anything, I have the exact same result. I have commented to the squad countless times this very fact. Yes i say fact. For every time i up a 262 i get nailed by puffy ack bout 3 out of 5 times. Mostly i lose an engine and land safe enough...but many times it puts me directly in the tower.

That's nothing... I upped a 262 this evening, hit auto level off the shore to build up speed... AND PLOWED INTO THE FREAKING WATER.

Yes, I'm not stupid, I hit auto level and not auto climb or auto angle. I set it to level and it just gently nosed in before my very eyes as I was typing something. This was at just shy of 300mph IAS (hadn't started climbing yet).

The flight model is a POS if ya ask me.

Krusty seeing as how that catastrophic autopilot malfunctions aren't modeled...you did something wrong.

It's a hard pill to swallow...but you did something not the flight model.

Negative. I took off, put a couple notches of flaps because I had a hill in front of me, gear up, angle over some buildings on my field, flaps up, check around, check map, get ready for autoclimb, hit autoclimb, instantly turn it off (going back to manual) because I nosed down and realized I wasn't fast enough. Held it on manual for a second, hit "x" (nothing else -- had I missed the key I woudl have zoomed, which I do a lot, but I did not zoom in this instance). Hit "/" started to type, nosed down and BAM. from like 75 feet to water just nosed down.

No pilot error, I guarantee ya that.

Just because you don't know what you did doesn't mean you didn't do it.

I had an S-Tec Autopilot crap out on me the other day and put me into a very fun steep turn.  I set it up right, turned it on and it just malfunctioned.

AH airplanes are all the same airplane and they don't malfunction the same way real ones do.  An example of what might've caused it would be you had pressed a key which trimmed nose down.   Either on your stick or the keyboard.  When the autopilot finally disconnected you were going down and the only hope you've got is to trim it back.  That can happen with real autopilots with auto-trim and that's called a "runaway trim"

The day hasn't come when HTC has modeled that though.

Consider that at times in the past one could not level out with the b24. [EDIT: No, wait.. that was before the b24.. b17? It was some heavy bomber] It would porpoise up and down horribly. One could not auto climb in the typh/temp without turning in a loose spiral turn while climbing. One could not do a lot of "basic" things until bugs were fixed. One or two bugs were caused by off-center CoGs (and if I recall in AH1 the 262 had this problem with autopilot too -- I mean the CoG was screwing up autopilot).

The autolevel light was on, yet the plane was diving. For a plane that flies like a tour bus, and turns like a house (hint: houses don't turn) it's not outside the realm of belief that HTC hasn't got all the bugs worked out of this very old flight model.

p38 is also an ack magnet...havent seen much of it on 262..i offer a weak excuse that 262 is going so fast that is seperates itself from 250 350 mph planes and stands out and is actually the only stable target in the bunch since it normally doesnt turn much..just a guess

I use the 262 quite often and have tested it in pretty much every situation one could put it into.  The autopilot has never failed or disconnected as a result of anything other than my own doing.

The jet is maneuverable enough and regarding its rate of turn...that is a function of speed.  The faster you're going the more difficult it is to turn.  Without a G suit you really can't sustain a heavy G load and without hydraulics to boost the controls you cant really apply the G's in the first place.  Both of those combined provide a relatively realistic model of how the 262 might likely fly.

As far as the autopilot...the 262 has been around long enough that more than just you would be having the problem.  Check your key and stick mapping.  You might have trim set to a button you don't know about or an input you didn't realize.  If that's the case...it could offer an explanation.

and notice..there is no auto-climb, it's auto-speed. ie the plane maintains your speed setting regarless of attitude

You can use Shift-X to set a pitch you want the airplane to maintain.  Alt-X ties the autopilot to speed and just X will maintain straight and level flight.

You know, on the autopilot question...

I don't have an answer, but I'll tell you this...I notice when taking off in buffs, that if I go immediately to nose gun and F3 external view...I should expect to be stable, and able to manipulate my view by turning the nose gun.

However...for reasons I still have not determined, that first external view and gun move will almost always translate to the control surfaces, and throw off the AP.  I have to go back into the pilot's seat, reset AP, then move back out to the view I want.  Sometimes more than once.

It's possible that you did correctly set AP, then changed views or something which kicked out the AP, and you just watched yourself quietly drift into terrain.  Been there, done that.

Now, I just go through a quick cycle of view changes and adjustments, going back to reset AP, while climbing out...then all is well.

Till about a week ago, I didn't have any problem with puffy ack, it got me a few times but more often just provided some ambience.

Since then I've been shredded by it as soon as I get in range to such a point that its my first target if I'm anywhere near an nme field. I've been turnfighting 1/4 of a sector away from nme towns and lost wings as soon as I go over 3k. I've been killed by friendly ack, seen nme's killed by their friendly ack and even taken damage from friendly 20mm.

Strangely though, I've lived after going afk at about 6k on auto level and accidently flying straight over an nme CV.

Personally I think that anything that can fire through hills with no line of sight has got to be screwed at some level. Ironically it seems the only thing unaffected by ack are low slow bombers flying in a straight line.

Krusty, maybe your joystick is spiking you out of auto.
