Gun collectors, opinion please

When it comes to M-1's I wouldnt know good from bad.  I'll show the pic, and copy the guy's ad thats selling it.

For sale I have a Harrington and Richardson 30-06 M-1 Garand rifle. It is a post Korean War manufactored rifle in the 5.5 million serial number range. The receiver and barrel are both H&R. The barrel has a 3-55 date next to the receiver, but I don't see a date or markings on the muzzle end of the barrel. The Op-rod and bolt are both Springfield Armory and the trigger group is International Harvestor. The trigger and action has a very good parkerized finish. The muzzle and gas port, where it comes out of the front handguard, has a dark, almost black finish. I'm not sure why this is, but it matches well with the rifle. I had a gunsmith look at the bore and he said it looked fine to him. I don't know the muzzle or throat erosion. I have included a picture of a bullet in the muzzle, just so you can see.

The stock is in nice shape. It has the usual nicks and dings, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The stock has the circle P stamp on the underside of the grip and the Department of Defense star and eagle stamp on the left hand side, behind the receiver. From what I have read, the stamping on the stock would be correct for the maunufaturer and serial number range. This rifle is an excellent shooter. It is extremely accurate and function has been perfect.

I would like $700 for the Garand and I will pay shipping.

Is it worth 700 bucks?

I think $700 is a bit high for a used Garand.

If it was brand new it'd be worth that much easy.

If it had all the accesories like sling, cleaning equipment, bayonet, extra clips and maybe some ammo you might go $700.

I'd say $400 tops.

That’s not a bad price at all. The only reason it is going that cheap is due to the mix of parts on the weapon. If the barrel, receiver, trigger group and bolt were all from the same manufacturer, it would go for an easy $1000 or better. Mixed parts are no big deal if you are going to do allot of shooting with it. Reliability is what you are looking for in a shooter. If you want a collector grade Garrand this isn't it.

But yeah for $700 I'd take it in a heart beat.

It looks like the parkerizing is in good shape.  The HR is not the most valuable of the garands but it is certainly as good as ny other and a better made gun than the winchesters in my opinion... since it is a late gun it has all the improvements... most garands have been rebuilt at the arsenal so it is rare to see one with a bad barrel.

CMP will sell you a garand that is not as nice for $450 but you have to belong to the program.

Street price for that garand is probly $700-1100

Itsa good deal. Good shooter no doubt. Would be happier with a throat and mussle erosion guage value, but even with nearly shot out numbers it'd still be a decent price for a mixed bag Garand.

Bear in mind that prices on firearms are always trending up. It'll hold or increase (adjusted for inflation) it's street value price forever.. after it's outlawed, it's value on the street will quadruple.

Big factor.. always buy from a private party face to face with no paper trail if possible. The longer the weapon stays outta the 'documented' loop the more likey it will remain in your possession defending your family in the future.

Its a good deal.

You cant even get a service grade Garand From CMP for 400$.

Go to the Fulton-Armory page

Read the section on rewelded recievers.

Have the owner take it apart and look the reciver over using the FAQ as a guide, if it is a reweld, do not buy it.

If it is not a reweld, buy it and shoot the **** out of it, they are the most fun in a WW2 rifle you can find!

Thanks for the info!  Unfortunately the gun has to be shipped here, so it will have to go through a FFL.  No choice about the paper trail.  I have talked to the guy who owns it, and he has several, he just doesnt need that many.  He's getting ready to retire and wants to focus on real collectible stuff.  This one he used for WWII re-enactments because he didnt mind if it got dinged up.  He couldnt give any grouping info, but said he never has any problem plinking with it out to 100 yards.  Not real informational, I know, but if it hits what he aims at that far away, I'm guessing it would group ok.  He is offering a 3 day trial, so I am really considering buying it.  I normally trend towards bolt actions in rifles, just as a personal preference, but my grandfather always swore the M-1 was the best rifle he had ever used in the war, and I've heard alot of good things about them here too.  I'll decide today.  I have a few toys I'm considering.  The wife is being lenient right now because of the holiday and letting me buy one.

You will fall in love with it.

You may want to look into CMP, you could get a service grade from them I think for 500 or 600 bucks.

You have to be part of a CMP asociated club, but you may already be with the cowboy shooting. You also have to have shot in a match of some kind, they list what works on their site.

Once you meet the requirments, they ship it right to your house no FFL needed.

I plan on ordering two after Xmas.

Link to the CMP site

Click on the sales link and the top of the page will have links to any requirments.
