and can only relate to lowbrow sit coms?

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/04/tv.arrested.development.ap/index.html

The show has won six Emmys and one Golden Globe, but some critics have suggested it's too zany to keep up with and the upper-class characters aren't "relatable" to audiences.

Hmmm, I dunno. I'm about middle class, barely, and I think the show is hilarious.

"I don't think the Home Builders Organization is going to support us," George says.

"Yeah, the HBO is not going to want us," replies Michael. "What are we going to do?"

"I think it's show time," George then says.

Arrested Development.  It's one of the funniest shows ever.

It's too bad few people watch it.

This just in... the networks are not motivated by awards, or talent, or quality.

This is purely a popularity contest.

The Coen Brothers are an acquired taste. Try "Raising Arizon", "Fargo", "Ladykillers", "O' Brother Where Art Thou?".

As for Napolean Dynamite... I didn't much care for it either.

This just in:

If people aren't watching it, maybe, just maybe it isn't as popular as the self agrandizing, self congratulatory media "we luv us" awards folks "think" it is. The ONLY award that really counts for the networks is how much money the network can make by keeping viewers watching the freaking commercial adds playing during popular shows.

Never saw it. didn't miss it, won't miss it and don't pay much attention to network television either. Frankly, IMO,  most of the sitcoms I have seen were vapid at best.

so you never saw it, yet are commenting on it.

Its worth a watch, it really is.  Honestly I think it would do good on HBO.

Yeah, popular shows like American Idol or who wants to marry a bajillionaire or meet your new insane mommy or etc.

That is lowbrow garbage and yet it constitutes 90% of the crap on TV.

According to critics apparently "it's too zany to keep up with and the upper-class characters aren't "relatable" to audiences."

Hence my thread title. However, considering what is popular, maybe I wasn't too far off the mark.

"Raising Arizon", "Fargo"...."O' Brother Where Art Thou?"

The  Nashville Network ran those three as documentaries a few weeks ago.

Immediately after the "simple folk" version of Masterpiece Theater titled "Hee Haw"

The number of viewers doesn't necessarily correspond to the quality of a show.    The original Star Trek only ran three seasons after all and look what that started.

Unfortunately, the networks don't care a whit about quality.
