'Mental health better' in country
4 January 2006

People who live in the country have better mental health than those who live in towns and cities, researchers have said.

Some theories have suggested that the isolation of rural living, the lack of social networks and difficulties accessing amenities have a negative impact on country-dwellers' mental health.

But other studies have shown higher rates of common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety in urban areas, and also higher rates of suicides.

Researchers writing for the British Journal of Psychiatry have revealed that people living in the countryside do have slightly better mental health than their counterparts living in the town.

The team, from Warwick Medical School, Portsmouth University and Bristol University, used information from the British Household Panel Survey, which began in 1991.

In total they looked at data for 7,659 adults in England, Wales and Scotland, taking into account factors such as age, marital status, employment, financial strain and physical health problems.

"There are small but statistically significant differences in rates of common mental disorders between urban and rural residents," the researchers said.

"Rural residents had slightly better mental health than non-rural counterparts.

"The effects of geographical location on the mental health of participants were neither significantly confounded nor modified by socio-economic status, employment status or household income."

The researchers found that rates of mental problems both starting and continuing were lower in rural areas. They also found a high rate of remission in people with common mental disorders at the start of the study who lived in the least densely populated areas.

I can't give any credit to an article wrote by a journalist living most likely in a town...

Isn't he supposed to be insane according to the article ?

ps look at what I'm reading right now :

 For us, basic eugénoliens, all Centauries look alike. In particular, it is impossible to differentiate between the Centauries’ four sexes. Sometimes as on Eugenol, one would say to me:

- the Veracious ones, who always say the truth
- Liars, who always lie
- Changing, who sometimes lie, sometimes say the truth
- insane which, contrary to the three other sexes, do not reason in term of logic, and can pronounce true sentences, false or contradictory.

The eugénolien traveler is already accustomed with this classification.
We will be interested, in this series, in some ignored aspects of the centaury anatomy. Indeed, Centauries do not look alike at all. Certain anatomical characteristics differ from one individual to another. For example, each centaury has or does not have:

One of the most known characteristics of Centauries is to have a specific organ enabling them to project hydrofluoric acid at some distance and under strong pressure. At the first time of their appearance on Alpha4, Centauries had frightening means of defence, allowing the species to survive in an inhospitable environment. This organ is not identical from one individual to the other, since it can be presented under seventy two different forms. This organ can indeed be:
° lenticular or non-lenticular;
° reticulated or -non-reticulated;
° pedunculate or non-pedunculate;
° retractable, semi-retractable or non-retractable;
° spiraled, semi-spiraled, or non-spiraled.

For example, the organ of projection of Centauries can be lenticular, non-reticulated, peduncular, retractable and semi-spiraled.
This family of Centauries is made up of a Veracious, a Liar, one Changing, one Insane, a First born and a Junior. We know of this family that:
1. the Liar, Changing and First born are lenticular, but not the three others;
2. Changing, the Insane one and the First born are reticulated, but not the three others;
3. the Liar, the Veracious one and First born are pedunculate, but not the three others.
4. there are four not-spiraled
5. the two semi-retractable ones are both either pedunculate, or non-pedunculate.
6. the two retractable ones are, one pedunculate, the other non-pedunculate;
7. the spiraled one and the semi-spiraled one, who are both non –retractable, are either, or both, lenticular, or both non-lenticular;
8. one of the retractable and the spiraled one are neither, both reticulaled, nor both non-reticulated, nor both pedunculate, nor both non-pedunculate;
9. the other retractable one and the spiraled one are neither, both reticulated, neither all non-reticulated;
10 the spiraled one and one of the retractable are both -non-reticulated;
11 one of the semi-retractable is reticulated;
12 the other semi-retractable one and the retractable one who is pedunculate , are both reticulated, or both non-reticulated.

Who is the spiraled one?

isn't pure logic beautifull ?

Uh oh, looks like Seattle and the surrounding area is firmly entrenched in a blue area.  Better move Rip.

This is either a hoax or a very strong indicator of the mental state of most liberals.

We're far enough out in the country to be out of that blue area (consider our area a pocket of red within blue) :)

Figured that would be your response. :)
You must have quite a commute.

Spent some time in Seattle last weekend and was amazed at the number and size of buildings Boeing owns.  That place is huge.

Outstanding Air Museum though.  We liked it better than the Smithsonian's two air and space museums.

You should have sent me a PM...I'm a member at the Museum of Flight and could have toured you around for free!

Since they've added the Champlain collection, its one of the top 5 air museums in the nation now. Beautiful work they did in setting up the environments for each display.

My "commute" is from my bedroom to my downstairs office 20 hours a week. Then twice a week up to Issaquah for meetings in the foothills of the Cascades. Traffic? What traffic? :)

Lmao I was thinking along the same lines.

In a study done in England Wales and Scotland. why is there a map of the US?

I dont suppose that because city areas are more populated the rural areas that the odds might be higher of you finding crazy people in city areas then you would in Rural ones?

I bet you can find more red barns in rural areas then in cities too lol

I believe the findings are per-capita.  However after reading the article from the actual link, I believe ol' Rip is pulling our collective legs with the map.
