Japanese Mistel's?

Anyone got any idea what this thing is? Japanese version of the German Radio Controlled MISTEL aircraft?

Carrier aircraft is a Kawasaki E7K1 "ALF." The orange object is listed as a MXY4 so it is made by Yokosuka Aircraft.



Was some Russian text with it - maybe some of our buddies to the East can clear it up.

i doubt it was a missile because it has floats. this suggests that it was probably some sort of testbed for airodynamic design. besides, the mistel bomber was not radio controlled, it was trimmed to fly in a strait line, so you just aim it at the target and let it go. also, if it WAS a bomb, why is it strapped to the top of the aircraft?

the engine could just suggest that it was a sort of unguided cruise missile (which is a kind of bomb).

Was the Mistel radio controlled?  I thought it was just lined up on target and cut away from the 190 to fall like a really big bomb?

The Mistel was a ju88(yes remote controlled, answered my own question)full of explosives attached to a 190 control plane, which once at target was cut loose and guided in by the 190 pilot.  It sure would have sucked to get bounced flying one of those, but I guess the odds were a lot better than piloting a "cherry blossom".
