Looking to form an AvA squad :)
« on: January 14, 2006, 09:35:12 PM »
Looking for any fellow 109 and Eastern Front enthusiasts to help form Grupul 7 Vanatoare.

This was an "elite" Romanian fighter unit which flew the Bf109 all through the war in some of the most hard-fought battles of the southern part of the Eastern Front, including the Crimean campaign, Stalingrad, the Kuban Bridgehead and defense againt the USAAF strikes at the Ploesti oilfields (they were one of the units involved in the June 10, 1944 battle which decimated the 1st and 82nd Fighter Groups)

Historically they flew the Bf109E until early 1943, when they were replaced with the G2. These were in turn gradually replaced by the G6. Several late-model, tall tailed Gustavs (G6/AS possibly) were also used, especially after the Romanians switched sides in August of 1944 and captured many aircraft that the Germans left behind in their retreat.

They were gradually incorporated into Grupul 9 Vanatoare during the campaign against the Germans as their personnel and equipment were lost to attrition and not able to be replaced.

Here is a link to a very good history of the unit. If anyone is interested in joining, e-mail me or look for me in the AvA Arena (my callsign is White13) and let me know.

I hope I can find someone else interested!

Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Some photos of Grupul 7 G2s (all from the same PR series in the late autumn of 1943)

From the same series, but another collection...

And one crashed one...

The insignia on the aircraft became the Grupul insignia for a time after they absorbed Escadrila 54, which had formerly been a Hurrican squadron. This insignia was replaced by a heraldic type logo later on.

White 13.

I may have just the guy for you. He's a member of my squad. Not that i would want to lose him but he's Romanian decent , and used to always fly those 109s when we were flying Axis. This may be right down his alley

I'll e-mail this thread his way. Glad to see your intrest in this arena, and I hope you have success building the squadron.!

Actually its 35 hours and 57 minutes late from being exact.

And why worry about me bumping a thread in a forum that sees maybe a dozen new threads a month? Would you rather I start a new thread that neither receives, nor requires, a reply?

Or is your life just really so boring that you feel the need to whine in every forum you have access to.
