motherboard died
« on: January 15, 2006, 04:38:04 PM »
Hi Guys -

Well, my epox 8RDA+ nforce2 motherboard decided to stop running sometime between Thrusday night and Friday.  So, I'm looking to build a new system.

This is what I've researched so far (all from newegg)

EPOX EP-9NPA+ ultra socket 939 nvida nforce4 ultra ATX motherboard

Connect3d 3038 Radeon X800GTO 265MB GDDR3 PCI-E X16

AMD ATHLON64 3200+ VENICE 1GHZ FSB SOCKET 939 MODEL ADA3200BPBOX

I have 2 sticks of 256MB of Crucial 184 DDR SDRAM DD400 (pc3200) from my current computer that I'm planning on resusing (if there are no issues) and I have a 400W power supply in my existing box

The only thing I'm a little nervous about is the x800GTO.  I've always been an Nvida guy, but thing thing has gotten great reviews on newegg.

What do you guys think?  Any changes needed here or better suggestions?

Thanks for the help!!

I'd go with an ASUS A8N Deluxe socket 939, but that's only because a few hardware review sites use that board when evaluating other components such as cpus and video cards.  I figure that if it's good enough to be used as a constant when reviewing other stuff, it's probably good enough for general use.

The memory is probably going to be fine for now, but eventually you'll want to get 2x1gig sticks of pc3200.

Nothing wrong with that cpu, but check price/performance before buying because you might be able to get a faster cpu for not much more, depending on how the prices are when you buy.

Nothing wrong with the power supply unless you go for an nvidia 7800 or ati 1800 card.

Speaking of video cards, I think I'd probably go for an nvidia 7800GT at this point.  Yea they cost a lot but they're a lot faster than the x800 and 6800 series cards.  If not the 7800, then I'd go for the newer nvidia 6800GS which is reasonably priced and pretty fast.

Check out http://www.hardocp.com for various hardware reviews.  Also check out http://www.anandtech.com and find their buyers guides.  They price out components for low, mid, gaming, and high-end builds.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I would take a look at the power supply and make sure it is a decent brand, i have a 7800GT and it's min specs are 18amps on the 12 rail . The 800GTO isnt as power hungry , but that new system might put a hurtin on a no name psu . 38

Check into the GTO you are buying.  Some models allready have the 16 pixel pipelines un-locked right out of the box!
