Peru Shoots Down US Plane

Just saw this in the newspaper. That's right. Peruvian pilot thought it was a plane carrying drugs and shot it down. A mother and her 6 month old baby were killed and the pilot was wounded.

Seems like nothing can go right in the skies anymore...

Its only reported when it is Americans that are shot down in this manner.

If you've worked with the central/south American anti-drug campaign at all you'd understand how easy it is for this to happen.  It is deffinately a bad place to take a personal plane out on a whim and do NOE flying.  And.. its definately a bad place for being mistaken for drug smuglers.

correct dejavu.

Now lets see if peru gets bombed in return

Added:

I still dont understand what the fek are missionaries going down to south america. I mean, heck, South America is THE most catholic, god/jesus worshiping continent in the world. I guess they want to nab what's left of the native indians. I feel bad the woman and child died, but raising a fuss about it is really dumb.

A few nights ago on CNN they were passing a special on US citizens that had been kidnapped outside the US. And yes, smack in the middle of the documentary comes the story of a US family of missionaries that went to Colombia to do missionary work.

The amount of BS about how noble they were to go down there and how "uncooperative" and "cold shouldered" the Colombian armed forces were for not immediately sending a rambo like rescue mission. For fuks sake, what kind of a moron takes his family to a country they KNOW is swarming with cold blooded rebels in the countryside and jungles and... yes, you guessed it, goes directly into the countryside and jungles to do missionary work, gets his family kidnapped, himself killed and then have their relatives and the survivors whining how this happened and why there was no action taken by the local police.

Stay home if you dont know what you're doing.

Tac, there is no Orthodox population in Peru, no "supressed" Moslim gangsters - so why bother bombing them?...

Missionaries - probably they were going to rent a stadium in Lima and beg for charity, as they did in Moscow? Hehe, very funny to talk to that "christians" in a subway! They come to you and ask you if you believe in Jesus. Then you talk to them for 5 minutes and leave them wondering why does this atheist know Bible better then their "teachers".

What kind of a person goes down to Peru to do missionary work?

Well, I only personally know one guy that does that: Clyde Peters. He's a Seventh Day Adventist.

I can say this: he's one of the finest kind of human beings I've had the pleasure to know and work with.

He just left on his second trip to Peru; he's going to be down there 3 years. His first trip, years ago when he was a young man was considerably longer. He wrote a book about it; I'll see if I can find it and post the title.

Basically, he flew to all the little villages in the jungle. Brought medicine, dentistry, farming tools, seeds and the supplies for everyday living. Yes, he preached the 7th Day line too. Didn't force anyone to listen; it's not his style. He believes that if you do good works, people will naturally ask to find out what drives you. Then he tells them.

When I knew him, he was a commercial pilot operating out of the field where my father keeps his plane. Clyde is a superior mechanic and an IA. He was always ready to help my Dad with problems with the PT-26; rarely did he charge my 80 year old father and then it was minimal.

During this period he flew a Beech 18 just about every year from Nebraska to Russia. He went to the area around Vladivostok. He brought donated medical supplies, seeds, tools, his incredible skills as a mechanic, clothing, blankets and yes....bibles. My father, in return, helped him in this endeavor.

Clyde did all this because of his faith; he never gets paid for it and basically lives a subsistence lifestyle. His family works with him; his kids have grown to be professionals, like doctors and such.

I'm certainly not a 7th Day Adventist, in fact I'm basically agnostic.

However, this is one man that went to Peru as a missionary and is going back again right now.

He's simply one really fine human being.

YMMV.

Damn straight Boroda, too many of our allies like Catholicism, so we can't bomb them like we do Orthodox countries.
But, Tac, I can't believe you've been in this country as long as you have and you have yet to realize that many Americans do not consider Catholics "Christians".

Oh and did y'all catch this part:
On Saturday a State Department official said that a U.S. surveillance plane gave
the Peruvian military location data for a plane that turned out to be a missionary
                  aircraft.

That somewhat suprises me.  Columbia and Equador I could believe it... but not Peru.  They weren't big fans of our South American war on drugs.  As a matter of fact, most of the drug planes were coming into Columbia from Peru.

But that was 7 years ago.  I guess we got them to sign on since then.

Basically, its a network of E-3 AWACS and ground radar sights accompanied by naval radar and E-2 planes all networked into one system looking for particular flight patterns.  Below X feet.. above X2 feet.. faster than XX speed.. slower than XX speed.

I guess on this particular day, the missionary's plane fit the profile too well  The real squeak is that it is impossible to tell if a plane is flown by drug smuglers or missionaries from the outside.

BTW.. I'm not about to start a "what the hell are missionaries doing down there anyways" debate on this subject.  It is irrelevant.  Some innocent people were caught in the crossfire of a questionable war.  The only real sad thing, imo, is that somehow its more important when the innocents are Americans.

Toad, I salute to your friend!

Missionaries that we see in Moscow are simple money-hungry people who in fact don't give a damn about religion. They only brainwash people who  lived their whole life without god... No difference between American preachers and Soho Asakhara with his weird ineterpretation of Buddism. Unfortunately, a sister of one of my good friends married a guy from Asakhara's gang, so I know what I am speaking about.

I'll talk to my friends in Vladivostok, maybe they know your friend. One of our 25th IAP pilots, Alexey "Wild" Ivanov is a well-known bard from Vladivostok, he owns Yak-18 and An-2 that are parked in a ROSTO (former DOSAAF) airfield near Vladivostok.

It was SOP to do this.  There had to be a communication issue of some sort.

According to the BBC, the plane had not filed a flight plan, was tracked by an American plane, was challenged by a Peruvian fighter, failed to respond, and was then shot down.

Peru is a major drug-growing area. Where do you think the Shining Path guerrillas got their money?

Sorry, but if people are stupid enough not to file a flight plan and fail to respond to a miltary challenge without good reason, then I'll invoke Darwin.

And it wouldn't surprise me if this plane was in fact carrying drugs.
