At the Library of Congress. Digichromatography... These are not paintings... they are color photographs from the early 1900's. Wow!

These are some of the best color photos I have ever seen, somehow they capture what one sees and how you see it in RL better than even modern color photos, yes there are some glitches but its simply amazing.

I am shoked... Been to this monastery (Nilova Pustyn', on Svetlitsa island on Seliger) many times, never thought it looked like that...  

In 1995 it was all in ruines. Only 5-6 monks lived there, restoration works were performed by school children from Moscow and other enthusiasts.

Now it's much better, but still not as on that old picture...

 

BTW, in 1995 their abbot had a personal Mercedes with a chauffeur...

It's amazing how colours bring these photos back alive. It feels like they were taken yesterday, though  it was almost a hundred years ago...
