F4U-4 guns..

OK, is it just me, or do the F4U-4's 50cals do more damage than other planes' 50's? Doesn't make sense that they would, since they're the same model gun as all the other 50cal birds... but they sure seem to take stuff down with less hits.

It might be that your generally moving faster relative to your target in the -4.  I notice that when I'm screaming down on some slow target in the Pony and hit them while I'm going 400+ it's like a buzzsaw, whereas if I'm hanging on their 6 going the same speed the .50s seem less effective.

depends largely on the angle you come in at, i would be surprised if flying your plane faster would make your bullets noticalbly more effective in terms of physics.

I vaguely remember someone posting that the -4 guns had either a higher rate of fire or higher muzzle velocity than the other corsairs.

That would account for it.. but they're most definitely more powerful than hte 1D's or 51's.

Odd - I had this same thought when I flew a few F4U-4 sorties last tour...seemed like the kiils came easier!

this subject still up for debate i guess..i know dam well the f6f's and fm2 seem to have better hitting power than the pony..thats just my opinion of course but countless sorties and it still feels that way to me

Some guy named Mfreak was saying that about the f6f last night so I took it up.every snapshot I hit with did visible damage, and some were pretty weak looking hits.

3 hits hurri, 2 engine 1 forward cockpit= engine oil
2 hits out pony wingtip took his aileron
only fired 200 bullets for 2 kills and 3 damaged planes.

I see a HUGE amount of variance, myself. There's times where I'll fire off a half-second burst from an F4U and blow a guy's wing off in one shot, but other times I have to park behind him for a good 5 seconds of fire to get the same.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I fly FM2 allmost exclusively...

About half of my shootings are assists.  if the guns were that deadly then I would not have so many assists.  I have watched a plane lite up from my guns for a sec  or two with LOT's of flash's only to get an assist when a spit took a snap shot at it.

I am allways amazed when a short burst causes a lot of damage.   I really have to stay on a con to get him to blow up... If I want to have sure kills (blow ups) in the Fm2 I need to use enough ammo that I can only get maybe 3 planes before running out of ammo..

sometimes... if the planes are getting hit just right, at the right convergence.. things go well and a 1 sec or better burst seems to take the wing off a spit.  Might get 4 or 5 like this in a sortie in a good furball with luck.
