Ok so I came back to my computer to find my mouse was not working, I checked to see if it was plugged in, tried rebooting my computer and it still was not working. I cleaned it out and tried again, still nothing, I tried a different mouse and it did not work either...
Then I got the bright idea to open the mouse up and see if anything was wrong loose or anything inside it, alls well except it seemed a little wet. I tried putting it back together to find that a spring somehow connected to the scroll wheel had fallen off and I cannot figure out how it is suppose to go back on.
Can someone provide a picture with how the spring should be positioned in the scroll wheel?
Can someone tell me why my mouse is not working. I tried the mouse on a different computer and it could click, scroll and move up and down but the cursor would not move left or right.

It is a standard ball mouse with scroll wheel that came with my dell

I figured out where the spring goes, now for why the mouse is not working...

Take the cover/access panel off where the ball is.
Drop the ball out.
Look at the rollers they are probably covered in crap.
You can buy all sorts of stuff to clean them, personally I used to use a pair of tweezers (carefully).

Or option B
Get a cheap optical mouse.

cleaning it was one of the first things I did. I got it working now, just needed to reboot after putting it back together.
It works fine, but it doesn't make that clicking sound anymore when using the scroll wheel, so I lost something there or something I did not see, but it still works fine.

No seriously..... have you considered just getting a new one?

Also, i did have similar problems a few years back with my old PC. Mouse seemed to be working on and off after bootup, sometimes just 'lock' after a while or be all fine for a few days. Turned out it was a degrading harddisk/OSinstallation that caused this. Maybe want to check up on that as well.

I have several friends, real engineers, who can easily spend 6 hours at work to repair a $3 mouse.

How long have you had it. If you bought it previous to last year most of the dells came with a 1 year warranty (unless you bought the extended contact) in which case you can call tech support and wait an hour to get through to a live technician then have the person (who doesnt speak proper english and with an accent you cant understand) try to make you troubleshoot it while you tell him or her the problem 10 times and then wait another 30 minutes to an hour for them to file a case and setup a dispatch meanwhile youll have to hold numerous times and listen to terrible elevator music and when they finally come back on line you may get a new one sent out to you. Other wise it will have 90 days or whatever you bought for contract and warranty and it still may be covered and you can still call and wait an hour to talk to some one who doesnt speak proper english and then wait another hour while he creates a case and tries to make you troubleshoot the mouse and get another one sent out (unless its a business contract in which you may get to talk to an american and it will take less than 20 minutes to get everything done). Or you can just save the hassle and go to Wal Mart and get a logitech usb optical mouse for 10 bucks.

p.s. I know this cause I worked for Dell for 3 years in tech support as a supervisor. I was glad I switched from Consumer to Business accounts as I got tired of listening to complaint from people about them not being able to understand the idiots in the Phillipines and in India.
