I heard that Media center is just a gimmick to sell useless junk with a normal XP. Windows vista will be the ultimate big brother os, I wouldn't actually wait for it. More like fear when you are forced to take it.
DVD-rom burners which do not have hardware coded area code / copy protection won't even play in Vista. With Vista you get sloppy seconds after RIAA/MPAA. You want to pay for that? I don't.
