I finally got the chance to shoot my M1A Scout.

We had a good time. I took one of my buddies.

Sorry I missed your email Grun, I was out late the night before playing poker and didn’t check my email before we left! Maybe we can arrange another week day to go shoot at Laz’s place.

The rifle did fine, the Iron sites were close, but I need to drift the front site to the right a bit since it is shooting about two inches to the right. I of course forgot to bring any tools.

My range box and all my gunsmith stuff is in Washington state. I am going to have to re-buy some of it, since I won’t be going up there tell the spring.

The EOTech site was a breeze to sight in, and it is pretty fun to shoot with. I really need a lot more practice though, my 100 yard target was pretty embarrassing. But I have not shot a rifle in about a year either.

Shot up all the South African ammo I bought, about 240 rounds.

Hmmm..............

Before you start drifting sights, have you considered using the windage knob?

Went through the entire way to set up your rifle for use. It was called setting the battle sight. Set to 300 yds if IIRC.

Adjust for horizontal and elevation using the knobs. Memorize the clicks used after you make sure both are zeroed. That is windage line is connected and looks like one line and elevation is all the way DOWN.

Then count the clicks used for windage and for elevation to bring the rifle on target. And remember how many and the direction.

NOTE: Should you disassemble the M1A for any reason you MAY have to retune your battle sights.

A further note: We had to keep a book that contained the proper setting for the range, qualification. It contained settings used for each position and distance fired. IE.. Prone rapid at 300. Prone slow at 500. You added in clicks for longer ranges. System works pretty good. The idea was you came to KNOW your rifle. And to KNOW what it could do.

Armourers course for the M1A/M14 may be worth investing in??????

If you are the only one that will be using the rifle then you may want to drift adjust the front sight to as close to on target as possible.

I used the windage nob to get the groups centered. But on a non windy day the rear site should be centered. The reciver and site have lines.

Battle zero I think, should be 8 clicks of elevation and the cite centered in its marks.

If it is not, then you drift the front site to get the groups centered.

What your talking about will work, but I would rather have the sites when they re lined up on the center line, be on the right spot on the target.

Not trying to be nosy but does your rifle have a new barrell?
If so you need to know the break in procedure.
And If ya shot 240 rds I hope ya cleaned her a couple of times.
If you dont have any pick you up some butches bore shine it will clean the copper outta a barrell toot sweet.

Its a new barrell, but I didn't do anything special prep to it.

Well, supposedly you're supposed to fire a few shots, then do a thorough cleaning, a few shots, a thorough cleaning... This goes on for about 100 bullets?

Btw, real shame you went with the Scout versus the long.

Nuthin wrong with a 'scout'.. tho it's carbine length it'll still accurately outrange any mouse gun... and still deliver a heluva wallop to the target. All he loses with the short barrel is a bit of muzzel velocity.

On the plus side, it'll 'shoulder' real quick, makes an excellent vehicle defense firearm (deploys really quick inside a car) and would be my pick for an urban 'situation' over a 'long' gun.

I just don't much like the gehy 'tactical' sight.. bulky; fragile (would it work after you fell on your rifle?) and detracts fron the superb 'clean' look of an excellent firearm. On battle rifles I prefer quick release optic mounts (minimum requirement) and if not quick release, then the carefully zeroed iron sights must be useable under the scope.

But that's just me.

I will be getting another M1 or maybe 2 more through CMP.

They have 22 inch barrels so I do not need another long gun. Though at some point I will get a full size M14 type.

I think I am going to have the M1 I have now rebarred to 308. That way I can take both to the range and use one ammo supply.

The EOtech Holo sites are supposed to be pretty tough. I have not banged it around much though.

I am going to get a 1 to 3 or 4 power scout scope for it too.

Very fun to shoot, but being on the spotting scope next to it when it goes off is the suck. I think because of the muzzle brake you get way more noise to the sides.
