Non-standard Lancs - white and black?
« on: February 02, 2006, 11:24:24 PM »
I picked up a book at the library today and in it, it had a color profile of a Lancaster. The paint scheme is black for all undersides and white for all uppers, with the white stretching down the sides 90%. Plane is drawn as WS*V (NX750), caption says:

"Shown in Tiger Force colours, the B.VII saw operational service during the war only in that force, this example being with No. 9 Sqn, which with No. 617 Sqn was then at Salbani, India. The B.VII(FE) (FE=Far East) had the Martin mid upper turret, but this particular aircraft has the bristol b.17 with twin 20mm guns, a la Lincoln"

What was Tiger Force? It's the only decent non-standard color scheme I can find that's during the war (and not after).

No scanner right now, sorry.

Tiger Force was intended for the Far East and was to be made up of Avro Lincolns operating alongside the B29s etc.  I don't believe the Lancs ever got into action in the Far East as part of Tiger Force.

They did some tours of the America's in that paint scheme post war and in the Middle East as far as I can determine.

9 Squadron and 617 Squadron went to India in 1946 but not during the war.  Not positive that paint scheme is wartime though.  Guess we'll need to keep looking for confirmation.
