at least you got to rearm.  We got raped by 3 squads of 40 la5's.

We got served on a silver platter.  but we fought them well considering the odds. 13 109's vs 40 la5's . There were planes everywhere ya looked and mostly red.

It would be frustrating Dace, but there sure was a lot of straffing of ground aircraft during the war. How many P-40’s did we lose a Pearl Harbor? Ever watch the video “Gun Camera Footage of WWII” which shows a LOT of that, and not all of them were aircraft just sitting there, but they were taking off or landing.

It did take place in WWII and it does or will on occasion in Squad Ops too. I remember a year or two ago someone dropped an egg near a rearm pad and took out 3 or 4 fighters with that one drop.  We even have a Snapshot that talks about a famous Me-262 pilot that was shot down on final.

Its happened to me twice since I started FSOs. One time was a single guy late in the frame, once was 5 or 6 P47s.  It kinda adds to the excitement for me. Having to land and refuel while others cover above...hoping you can get up again before someone comes in.

Ya..it feels lousy when it happens...but without the risk of it..the FSO would be just that much tamer.

Sometimes you die and you don't want to.  Its part of the game.  Many soldiers and airmen will happily remind you it is also part of war.

Really, while FSO is intended to be more realistic than MA, you can't expect absolute realism, it simply will never happen...

At the end of the day, your job and everyone elses is to win the frame.  IF that means shooting someone on the rearm, or on takeoff or landing, I would do it.  As was frequently done in the real war.

I think it is silly to expect immunity from enemy fire at any time in Aces High... The one way it is most realistic is that it is a chaotic warzone...

There was a line in Band of Brothers that pretty much summed it up... "The reason you're still scared and the Captain isn't, is that you still expect to survive..."

I have died on the rearm pad as have others. We have made it a policy to rearm in flights. Flight A will cap while flight B rearms and then switch. Last night there where so many squads in the area that we flew cap while the AKs rearmed and then we switched

Worse can happen!

Yonks ago, I can remember when we were upping from a cv, some clown test fired his guns as a whole bunch of us spawned.
Killshooter was off and one life was strictly enforced.  That twit took down about 30% of our force in the first few seconds of the frame.

Rules have changed to avoid this ever happening again.  Rules brought in to modify players behaviour usually work better as carrots than sticks though.  In that incident we didn't have a choice in the outcome so something needed to be done.  In the matter of landing or rearming the player has choices of when and where in order to increase his security.

Choosing where you are going to rearm is a duty CO's must exercise with care.  You might want to get back to the fight quickly, but if you land at a base under attack (especially a nominated target) you are playing Russian Roulette with more than one round in the chamber.  Fuel management options in AH2 are such that a safe field can be usually found with some certainty.  I had this lesson rammed home recently in FSO whilst sitting on a rearm pad at Port Moresby as bombs from 2Ok "Betties" exploded all around.  Next time I'm going to Townsville!  :)
I get really really tired of selective realism disguised as a desire to make bombers easier to kill.

Frustrating yes but you should have had a CAP.... (If you did not have planes for a CAP, well thats just the nature of FSO)

One of the most exciting times in FSO for me was having my squad trying to rearm whilst knowing that there were NME in the vicinity.....

Everyone was low on GAS and ammo but ppl had to stay airborne to provide a cap...

If it was a case of "who care's they cant shot at us on the ground", then it may as well be the MA, IE: "who cares I will just up a new plane".

No excitement in my opinion......
