P-47D Dive "Brake or Flaps"
« on: February 05, 2006, 02:06:03 PM »
Any idea on how to use them properly? Say with Combat trim on/off? Deploy before compressing or after? Do they cause drag when used at lower speeds?

Compressible Recovery Flaps
Late P-47 models have incorporated flaps for the purpose of aiding in recovery from dives of compressibility speeds. These surfaces are operated by two electric, reversible, intermittent motors synchronized by flexible shafting. Magnetic brake and clutch assemblies are incorporated to prevent overtravel and switches limit the flap extension to 22½° so as to hold "gs" to a safe value during "pull-outs."

At least with the dive flaps in the P-38, it was recommended that they be deployed just prior to the dive and not deployed while in the dive.  I would imagine the same to be true with the Jug.  Just one note though, don't use Combat Trim if you're using dive flaps, it will negate the benefits of the dive flaps.

Did some testing seem to work best if you deploy before compression. So similar to the 38 in that regard AKAK. I am going to do some speed test to see if they have any affect in level flight. Might give me an idea of how much drag they create. Combat Trim is evil slow and fast but great for mid range speeds.

My understanding with dive recovery flaps on the 38 is that they had to be deployed prior to the dive, as the motor deploying them did not have the tourque to deploy them at speed.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

Looking at the original question -

I 'believe' that the dive flaps ingame only work correctly with combat trim turned OFF.
At least that's what I've always been told.

Unless anyone else......
