Dude, I really didn't care who won. OK ... be fair ... after the Steeler fans booed Brady during the coin-toss I cared a little, that was really lame. The kind of stuff I'd expect from Raider fans.
But as a fan who watched the whole season and watched all the playoffs, to see the championship game so heavily influenced by the refs made the whole post-season seem like a waste. Usually in professional sports when ref's make a bunch of bad calls one way, they balance them out by the end of the game. NHL, NBA ... there's always a "make up" call in there to balance things. The NFL seems to be the exception to this, though. There was no balance in the officiating last night. And it wasn't just one bad call - it was at least half a dozen, most of which completely changed the tempo of the game.
Yes, Seattle dropped a lot of passes and bit on the trick plays. But if the ref's hadn't removed 10-17 points through their idiocy (or whatever was really going on) then would Seattle's mistakes have mattered as much? They did pick Rothy off twice, right? They did hold the Steeler offense to 3-and-out almost every series, right? How many 1st downs did the Steelers get in the first quarter ... one? When allowed by The League, they did move the ball effectively, right? Would the Steelers have kept their composure and executed as well down the stretch if the refs hadn't been so ... uh ... kind to them? We'll never know.
The Steelers barely made it into the playoffs - so saying they "deserved" this doesn't ring true. Both Denver and the Colts were as dominant this season, and the Pats were peaking at the right time to be a threat to any of them.
Scanning through the various sports web sites this morning, each one seems to have an article on the rotten officiating. Except nfl.com ... on there you have the official league position and Holmgren going: "Gosh, gee willickers, our team usually doesn't make that many mistakes." Welcome to The Machine.
And, yes, the half time sucked. The only commercial that was close to charming was the FedEx dinosaur one - the rest sucked. Boring. And does anyone at all think Jimmy Kimmel is funny?
