How to improve the NFL
« Reply #15 on: February 06, 2006, 03:02:56 PM »
First of all lasersailor, it is not a sport,..it is a business.  Me, I do not find much interesting in watching financial news, and I see the NFL as pretty much the same category.

Is it solvent?  Does it make money?  If yes, then it would appear to be doing well at what it is supposed to be doing.  Making money for others.  How could it make more, is the question you are asking, as that would be the prudent thing to improve upon for a business.

Steel spikes on the pads, hidden mine fields and random mortar fire would make it much more fun to watch!

I like the spikes idea.

My idea of the ultimate football game is get rid of Clothes line penalties.
Go back to not just being down, but down and stopped like they did in the old days when just knocking someone down wasnt good enough. Back then they could just get up and keep running. They actually had to be down and stopped, unable to move forward any more.

My idea of the ultimate football feild is a dirt feild with gravelstone End Zones:aok
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

1.  Get rid of all the BS excuses to not call a fumble a fumble.  The "tuck", the "he didn't have possession and control", the "muff", all that crap.  If you have the ball, and you drop it, it's a ****ing fumble, and it should be returnable all the way by any man on the field.
2.  Undo about 20 years of increasingly ridiculous defensive pass interference rules designed to artificially boost scoring.
3.  Undo about 20 years of increasingly ridiculous QB protection rules designed to artificially boost scoring.
4.  Call offensive holding by the book.  Not "we'll let it go 90% of the time but call a few just to make it look honest."

Ya its a business all right.  Its one of those things where the customers have so little say in things, even though its their money through ticket sales, merchandise etc that keep it going.  Like a crack addict telling the drug dealer how they should run their business. What are they gonna do boycot it? :)

That is pretty much what I did Filth.  I have not seen an NFL game in 20+ years.  The first two strikes pretty much did me in as a fan of professional sports.

Is there anything more ridiculous than thirty year old men earning outrageous salaries for scoring touchdowns and then strutting and preening in the endzone like junior high punks?

Cricket. (sorry, couldn't help it)

Actually, rythmic gymnastics, synchronised swimming, pickup truck racing are a few sports that are rediculous.

Paying big bucks to recording "artists" who can't sing, (rap)

Yeah, there are a lot of things that are more rediculous.

How much would you charge to perform for the crowd if you knew you'd be an arthritic cripple at age 50?

Toad,

At the risk of sounding crass I have to say, So What.

I'm 52 and have arthritis.  I have a friend who developed rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 20.  The only bright spots in her life are her family and a husband who is an absolute saint.

The "pros" have a choice in the matter.  Most of them enter the draft with only one thought on their minds...getting as much "geetus" as possible...with concerns about possible future health problems a distant second.

Besides, most of them make it into retirement without major injuries or lingering health problems.

Really? Talk to some Div I college ball players. See if most of them agree.

Football makes you pay. The longer you play, the more you pay.

Talk to some coal miners: See if black lung, cave ins, explosions, etc make it worth the 2.3 million per year they get.

Same goes for typical injuries for fire fighters, police, ....

Just pointing out there's a price being paid to get the big bucks.

There usually is, unless you're into white collar crime.

And, without doubt, there's always those who pay that much or more and get the little bucks.

However, one usually finds that EVERYONE thinks the OTHER GUY is overpaid.

Rarely do you meet the guy that says "I'm overpaid".

I'm sort of wagering that the folks that think pro sports players are WAY OVERPAID never played that particular sport at a very highly competitive level.

I'm sure there are exceptions though.
