.PNG fix for Internet Explorer?
« on: February 08, 2006, 09:00:41 AM »
Is there any way to force IE to see .PNG images used in a webpage? I hate .GIF. I believe IE 7 betas have .PNG fixed. The only solutions I have found for 6 or 5.5 is java scripts which aren't ideal. I use Firefox and .PNG images work fine.

Any insight is appreciated...

You mean you have a transparency problem?

I haven't tried this but it looks pretty simple. What kind of layout are you thinking about?

Yup the transparency issues.

For example if I want to use this image on a webpage:

Then the folks with IE 5/6 don't see it (red X).

For those of us using Firefox .PNG with transparencies show up fine.

Even my avatard is .PNG and the IE folks say they just see a red X.

I found this page:

The PNG problem in Windows Internet Explorer but its a java script. I was shoping to avoid that.

Interestingly enough my IE6 shows that PNG just fine. No fix, just regular setup.

I dunno 2 of my squaddies said they see red Xs both using IE 6.029.

As for the your SS in IE 6 in firefox it looks as follows:

I guess the red Xs are a separate issue to the transparency...

Yes I use firefox for browsing too, just opened it in IE for giggles (because I know I was able to open PNG with it before).

Is that a real png or a png created by script? If it's by script, it might be blocked on this forum. I see it fine in IE6 from here (I'll check 5.5 from work tomorrow).

Edit: from your link:

"The fix allows IE to properly render PNG alpha transparency"

This is a workaround to the transparency, the image should still be displayed. Are your squadies using an AV product that prevents PNG from loading?

Apparently they found fixes for their red X issues. One was that Quick Time was taking over PNG from IE. There was a fix for that. The other just did an IE 6 repair using his XP disk. They see the images now.

Lol Quicktime is THE worst piece of junk of a player I've ever seen.

It rips every possible file association by default, is now bundled with mandatory Itunes install (how lame is that) and leaves a background process running.

If there wasn't the 'quicktime alternative' with MP classic, I'd prefer not to see a quicktime movie ever again.

The thing with Quicktime and the .PNG file association was that he had removed  QT a while ago and the file association was never reset. Itwas just a matter of getting that fixed. He found so help on the net...
